Let's Master Orion: Spoilers: We're still awesome
« on: July 01, 2013, 11:26:16 am »

Master of Orion II is a 4x strategy game that came out in 1996, meaning I'm finally going to get to LP a game that's younger than me. After playing for a couple of hours I have to say, I quite love this game. It is shallower and less complex than, say, Civilization, but in my opinion that only increases the replayability and decreases the amount of annoying micromanagement. However, unlike Civilization, Master of Orion II allows you to heavily customize and modify your ship designs, allowing you to produce the cheapest of frigates to (almost) unstoppable Death Stars.

Since this is a Bay12 LP, I'll be happy to try and fulfill any requests and demands from the audience. Don't worry if you don't have any clue on how the game is played, I don't either! Okay, maybe I do, but I'm hardly the greatest of players and I'm definitively going to have to check out a wiki or two to figure out what the hell each tech does.

Anyways, enough rambling on my part. We've got a galaxy to create.

Spoiler: Galaxy Settings (click to show/hide)

Generating a galaxy is only half of starting a new game. We'll also have to pick one race out of thirteen to play as. Each race has their own advantages and disadvantages. We can also make our own custom race, but that's a rather complex process so I'll only talk about it if a majority wants that option.

Spoiler: Races (click to show/hide)

If you have any questions about the game or the racial traits, feel free to ask. You can also name star systems when you colonize them, so if you're feeling megalomaniacal, feel free to submit some names as well.

As a long time MoO geek, I am in, and so very hard. I demand we either play as a cybernetic civ and go all borg, or as the silicoids who dont really understand how those squishy bags of meat work.

My vote is for:

Hard, Huge, Mineral Rich, 8 players, average tech, yes tactical, yes events, yes antarans.

custom race

Custom unification klackons with telepathy.

My two cents:
Galaxy Age
Mineral Rich: Lots of minerals, but habitability of planets is less (more irradiated and barren, but you can fix those).
Organic Rich: Mineral quality is poor, but higher habitability of the planets.

Since mineral richness determines how much each colony can produce early-on, Mineral Rich will generally give a quicker and easier game.

Tech Level: Advanced is probably more crippling than helpful.  While you get two battleships, they probably won't have shields and will be overloaded with bombs instead of actual space combat weapons, so you'll have to refit them once you get some good tech.  And worse of all, planetary distribution is standardized, so you don't get the benefits of quick exploration and conquest.  The galaxy is packed and new colonies generally come from other empires.

That being said, I'm in favor of Mineral Rich, Advanced Tech Level.  It should make for a quick game, one way or another.

While I love the idea of not knowing what planets and other empires are out there:
Custom unification klackons with telepathy.

Be super smart mind-controlling bugs.
This is too cool to pass up.

Also, I'm a big fan of espionage.  Best way to get those "second best" techs.

I vote large, rich, with average tech.

For race, I support unification telepathic klackons that are repulsive, have a +10 spying bonus, and live on a large world.

Tactical Combat: Y/N. Do ships fight on a map or... something. I set it on the first thing I did, and I haven't turned it off since. We'll go with Yes for now since space battles are kinda neat.
Turning it off disables ship design, too. The design AI likes bombs.

I love playing pre-warp starts myself.  And I looooove creative to the point that I can't play without it.  I usually sacrifice population growth and ground combat strength, possibly ship defense.  You can more then make up for ground combat and ship defense with tech diversity.

Who else loves getting neutron blasters and tractor beams?

Advanced is probably more crippling than helpful

Not for telepaths.

How so?  Only thing telepath does is tell you where to send your ships, whether you want easy conquest or unclaimed colonization.  Doesn't make up for grab-bag tech and a crowded theater, though I guess using a larger galaxy would reduce the crowded part.

I like the idea of the Psionic Klackons.

Good with pretty much anything else.

I usually play as Psilons or Trilarians with Psilon-like stats (mostly because the Trilarians look badass; and making them techno-Lovecraftian terrors is pretty fun). Sometimes, I play as a Yehat-alternative form of the Alkari (dedicated stats to ship-to-ship (combat and defense), and production at the cost of ground combat and other ground-based stats).

I'm interested in the psychic bug bomb as well.

Ooh, PTW!
Also +1 to the psychic unified bugs.
I really hope the humans switch to a fascist like government at some point. Then when we go to Wat with them we can make Starship Troopers references.

Gaurunteed? No, but it's pretty reliable. Anyway, we're only playing on hard.

Post to watch.  This is one of my favourite games.

My preferences--demo/creative.  Mostly because I loves me some research.  We have to min-max a bit in order to get there.  Demo/creative makes life difficult in the beginning, but is an utter powerhouse in mid-to-late game.

Uni-creative is another possibility.  Requires fewer sacrifices than demo/creative.  Fast building means fast expansion.  No morale penalties.  The ineffectiveness of morale-raising structures is compensated by the massive bonus to building and farming.  Unfortunately, there is no compensation for research.

Another question--who do we not want to face (ahem, DARLOCKS, ahem).  We can always use an AI race protrait, making it impossible for the computer to use that race.
