I think wurm online is unique. I am kind of lazy and I get bored with all the clicky stuff to make buildings, but I can see why its so popular. I think this is the only game that really combines building with RPG elements where you get stronger over time with skill levels etc... There are other games out there that do more RPG without of crafting or alot of crafting with some RPG. This one combines both. Im just too lazy to get into it.

I did see a game (I think on steam greenlight) where there is nothing in the world and you have to form communities to rebuild the world. Its in free open beta. I can't remember the name of it. The communities are like guilds. I see them advertise for members on the forums.
I can't remember the name.

i saw another sandbox game in development where they claim the game will start with nothing and you build stuff, then over time technology advances. I don't remember the name of it.

Wurm is pretty unique. I think its mostly one developer too. Very impressive.

Wurm has always interested me, it just seemed to lack the huge playerbase that the game needs in order to be really awesome. A huge open world that the player can literally shape with just a shovel, but that's a recipe for disaster in some respects, and a recipe for awesome in others. Cooperating with other people (via a community like this) is what makes the game more awesome, as you get a bunch of like-minded people making settlements.

I just wish somebody would 'start from scratch; and perhaps use a different engine. I dunno, making a game in java just doesn't seem all that great an idea. Unity seems to be better these days.

Yeah, I agree. Java has great accessibility but it seems like a nightmare for huge sandbox projects, at least nearly every one I've played has had terrible optimization issues.

Wurm's great when you have time, it can be played in so many different ways. I personally like to rough it by myself and reserve socializing for neighbors/travelers, that's mostly due to my control freak side so I'm ok with starting and planning a village too but I don't really care to be a villager lol. Terraforming has to be the most addictive aspect of Wurm for me, though.

EDIT: Also, Terrafirmacraft looks awesome, I've been so bored with Minecraft for the past few years. TY!

Wurm has always interested me, it just seemed to lack the huge playerbase that the game needs in order to be really awesome.

In some of the already developed servers, the small playerbase is what makes the game fun. Instead of spamming the chat for ql9001 sukmidiks, you have people who know eachother and have a history with their neighbors. Every transaction is done with a friendly smile instead of a reserved glare and a shaky hand on the sword, bow or 0.10 weight oak tree trunk.

There's been some pretty impressive community projects done purely out of goodwill - mountain passages, land canals, boat bridges, they're all built by people working together for a common goal.

Personally, I think a huge community would ruin the very foundation of what makes Wurm so enjoyable.

Then it happened. Then I cringed. Then I picked it up and beat him to death with it, and then his buddies, too.

There was/is just something about strolling around in wurm, meeting someone and deciding to spend half an hour doing some random terraforming project, or just looking at the amazing things people have done. Probably why I played it for 5 years.

Kindness will get you far in Wurm. I played on the old Golden Valley server, which was the F2p server at the time and everyone on it was capped to 20 skill and it was a fairly small island (in comparison to the main clusters) so it was a mixed bag of good people and griefers/problem children and I managed to keep myself safe by being a bro to everyone I met.

This lead to many funny events, where I'd hear about people up the coast getting griefed by folks who had just passed through my 'land' (no deeds on GV), whom I conversed, fed and gave tools and I was never bothered by them. This gave me a unique opportunity to talk to the 'griefers' afterwards and it ALWAYS turned out the victims had started it. (though, I don't condone griefing, but it shows most griefers will leave you alone unless you give them a reason not to)

:'( All of these Wurm stories

GOD WHY MUST I DO ANYTHING BUT WURM

But no matter, I do have the launcher and game fully updated for whenever...

I still remember the first time I played the game (25th december 2006)
A big day for me - the first time I'd stayed up past midnight

I loaded.... "Welcome miningman! Wurm has been waiting"

waiting, waiting, waiting

Black screen. Oh. Damn.
For some reason I decided to stand up, but thats when I saw it - A PLAYER

Jesus this is nighttime??????
(Delamore: miningman you wanna come with us?)
(me: Why is it black)
(Delamore: It's nighttime, coming with us?)
(me: hold on let me just get these wood scraps)

ah the joys oh JK:H gold server...

Nothing will ever be as fun as starting this game and having no idea what to do  :(

Now I kinda wanna play Wurm again, but it's such a huge time sink. With my job and stuff it's harder for me to play all the time.

I think my biggest issue when i played Wurm was finding food and stuff to eat by myself.

Yeah, I have ~5 hours a day... It's really not enough to play wurm and actually accomplish anything

And for food - just forage and botanize all tiles. youll end up with good stuff to eat, and seeds for planting. Getton cotton asap and make a fishing rod. Then you just fish whilst making sure the rod doesnt break :)

Also, you can find mushrooms by tree trunks - they are 0.4kg and 99ql most of the time so fill you very quickly to 100%!

If only wurm's epic server elevation had more than 100 playing at times i would consider getting back.
Now it feels too much time sink than getting the fun out of it.
Too many servers for that low playerbase on pvp side.
