I'm having a really hard time finding games that are similar to Wurm Online. Games that are hardcore survival. Doesn't necessarily have to have terraforming like in Wurm or Minecraft, although that is a big reason the games attract me. And doesn't have to be necessarily about farming either, but more about the survival aspect and being able to build or craft things.

I've tried several but it's like each one has bits and pieces that I like, but pretty much none of them offer everything I want in one game. Unreal World is great but is still missing a ton of features and things to do. Dwarf Fortress is of course a masterpiece of endless emergent situations that has both terraforming and survival, but DF is DF and I've been playing it for 3 years and want something different. Salem and their other game, Heaven and Hearth, again offer some of the aspects I'm looking for but not all of them. Wurm itself is plagued by Rolf's inability to commit to the development of the game and that's pretty much the only thing that's keeping it from reaching it's full potential.
Then there are lots of small ones whose names I don't remember that always start development with great potential and enthusiasm, but then after a year or two the developers give up and never return, and those kind of games pop in and out almost constantly all the time. Heck you could say Salem is pretty much just like that.

Planet Explorers is promising but it's still in much too early stage to be able to really play it for enjoyment, and StarForge is pretty much in the same boat.

So can someone suggest any more of these games?

Don't starve is a good contender. There are so many other games of this type but a lot of them are disappointingly buggy/unfinished.

You would have loved Topia online but the developer is currently AWOL :/ *sighs*

I wish just someone would fucking finish one of these games for once and give us a final game which is fun and not buggy as fuck

Now that I think about it, isn't Mortal Online close to what you're looking for?

Mortal Online is a complete mess. I bought in on what the devs were promising during development, but when the game came out it was something.... something else completely. It hasn't changed much since then.

Also I forgot to mention Terraria, of course. Even though it has terraforming and building/crafting, the game is more focused on combat than survival, I think. And of course the grind is just terrible... collect all that copper to make yourself a full copper suit of armor/weapons. Then find iron... now go collect all the iron needed to make a full iron suit of armor/weapons.... Then find another more precious metal... etc etc. And all the crafting is mostly focused on combat, again.

Do you like Minecraft? There is an extremely hardcore mod around that I came across a while ago. Just making a pick axe is a LOT of work - collect ore, smelt... it took inspiration from Dwarf Fortress. I don't have the name handy, but that may tide you over for a while :)

TerraFirma Craft

Also try UnReal World - it's Far North and Distant Past, Scandinavian Stone/Iron Age type of survival.  Can be exceptionally brutal.

Then of course, Haven and Hearth is "Wurm, but free, isometric, and shit."

Yeah both those two I mentioned in the OP... maybe I was rambling and it wasn't clear. I played both, and although I really liked Unreal World I've played it for several months non-stop and have pretty much played all there is available to play. It's not a finished game, missing a lot of things that could be there, and the development on it is slower than the ice age, unfortunately.

I've heard of TerraFirma Craft, but haven't had the chance to try it yet. Honestly, I'm pretty fed up of minecraft. I bought the game back when it first went out of the infdev build or whatever and into it's first beta, played a lot, but then stopped because it becomes boring very quickly. I've tried Minecraft again just a few months ago and I have to say the game has gone in almost polar opposite direction of what I was hoping it would go in.... the grind... the bore! I don't know if a mod that adds even MORE grind to it would make the game more enjoyable.

Minecraft is best played with IndustrialCraft, or flat out Technic.

Starbound also looks very decent, coming out in discounted beta soon-ish.

Me and you walk the same road, OP. I've been scouring the universe for games like this for 8+ years and every year my hunger for these games grow.

I almost kind of wish Rolf would leave Wurm be and attempt a 2nd game from scratch, possibly taking advantage of recent crowd funding technology (I know a lot of people around here are meh on crowd funding right now, but bottom line I think some ideas need some love). I think my ideal game is pretty much Wurm Online + Mount & Blade/Elder Scrolls combat and maybe less timers and more... activity, IDK lol. However, Rolf has a family and otherwise seems like an average joe and I don't think he would step away from the security of Wurm.

ANYWAY, have you looked at Wayward yet? It's not exactly a beast of a game but its features should give you some fun breaks every now and then. -> http://www.unlok.ca/about-wayward/

Also, you could keep an eye on Stardew Valley -> http://stardewvalley.net/ It's not a survival game, more like Harvest Moon on steroids but, I figure if we share one interest maybe we'd share another.

You, sir, are a gentleman. Thank you. I have almost lost hope of finding anything new in this vein of games, but now I can't wait to get home and try these out!

Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead.   :P

It has crafting, building and I think farming sorta works. Never lived long enough to test if it works myself, but even without it, it is a really hardcore survival sim.

I wish I had the time to play Wurm, but 5 hours a day isn't enough, especially if I want to have a social life aswell. Although thinking about it, Wurm would be my social life.

Rolf has recently jumped off his lazy ass and started working on Wurm a lot more. In the last six months there have been more interesting updates than the last six years combined. Multi-story structures, a bunch of new servers, new graphics/anims, all sorts of nifty things. I believe there's even a development company with half a dozen or so people dedicated to Wurm.
