You check the news, deciding to go for the museum story. Looks like it's exactly as it says - the Revolutionary Museum of Ontario, the world's foremost collector of neo-communist artifacts, has finally announced that it no longer has the funds for continued operation of its exhibits, as donations seem to have decreased by a fairly wide margin lately. The curator of the museum, Dr. Rudolph Syme, has explained that it is clear that in these booming times of capitalism, the looming specter of ancient communism is all but forgotten, and that very few care about their history these days, what with all the person engineering and whatnot. Truly, we live in sad times.

Okay, that was reasonably distracting. Time to question Ms. Bartolucci.

"How are you holding up, Ms. Bartolucci?" you ask of her.

"Been better."

"What about you, Jerry?"

"The world seems like it's crashing, or at least that's how it seems to me."

Gee, that's awfully pessimistic. Better make some appropriate smalltalk. That'll cheer them right up.

[-2] "You know, I just found out that the Revolutionary Museum in Ontario-"

"Not now, Jasmine. Please."

Soon enough the guy that left returns, hefting two packages in his arms. You're not sure what they are, but the packages look kind of familiar to you.

"Right, let's move along."

You are quietly taken down the line for about fifteen or so minutes when the party stops. The kindly man turns to face you and the others.

"Down that tunnel there'll be a breach, and you can get out that way. There'll be a cloud in your way, but if you don't mind your eyes tearing up and you're fast enough on your feet, you can get out easily enough, just run straight out of the breach. Now go on."

Ms. Bartolucci and Jerry shrug and start going down the tunnel at a leisurely pace. You're about to follow them, but somebody taps you on the shoulder. Looking back, you notice that it's the busker.

"Don't follow them," he whispers to you.

Check the news on Julius Traffard, and quietly ask why we shouldn't follow them.

You decide to check up on the news about Julius Traffard the Fifth, because why not?

[+1] Sadly for you, the article includes a, shall we say, vivid image of the lucky victor of the competition. To be honest, you're not sure how something like that can survive - you can't even make out proper limbs on that giant lump of flesh, all covered in weeping sores, monstrous tumors, pulsing veins and sparse clumps of rough, twisted hair. But that's not the freakiest thing - the creature has human eyes and a nicely-proportioned human mouth on its formless bulk - in the image its mouth is hanging open, revealing three rows of shiny, white human teeth. You're not sure why you find it so disturbing that it would have them, but it does add a certain pathos to the creature - it can look at you sadly, making you consider the inhumanity of both the contest and the creature's fate, although the two are intertwined inextricably, you guess. Well, at least the Glebin Engineering team that made him got the grand prize, you suppose. Too bad the others didn't - some of the other entries seem quite grotesque as well, and you don't think they'll have much of a place in the world aside from the competition.

Also, you find out why Julius Traffard the Fifth is called that - apparently he was built from the ground up from the genome of somebody who was named Julius Traffard, and this creature, the fourth of its line, was the first design to demonstrate long-term survivability, thereby making it eligible for the competition. You suppose you wish all the world's luck to the ugly little bugger, though you're unsure if it needs it.

But anyway, you remember that you had some business. You lean back toward the busker.

"Why shouldn't I follow them?" you whisper back.

"You'll die. Talk to the guys, say you won't say anything."

Do as he says.  We may be able to use this information to save our master and ourselves, which it doesn't seem like they want, but first we need to acquire the information.

You decide to do as the guy says, turning to the other fellows in suits.

"I won't say anything about what I have seen here today."

"Ah, very good. We'll mark you, then. Roll up your blouse a bit, the abdomen's the best place to do this sort of thing," the kindly-looking man says, pulling out a rather intimidating-looking instrument from his inbuilt suit backpack looking a little bit like a mix between a giant syringe and an industrial rivet gun.

"This will hurt a lot," the man says, holding the instrument up. You look over at the busker. He shrugs and nods apologetically. You look back at the thing that the guy will presumably "mark" you with, whatever that means.

Man, that thing looks menacing. Clearly it wasn't designed to be used in a hospital. You doubt it's sterile by any stretch of the imagination. Your heart starts to beat faster as you begin to dread what might happen to you shortly if you comply.

You suppose it might be better to ask these guys what that thing is before you have to find out the hard way.

"Um, what is that thing?"

"This? This is the branding gun. We'll mark your skin with it. You'll be branded, so to speak. Betray the brand, and bad things will happen."

You aren't sure whether that really explains much, but you suppose you've got no other choice. You expose your belly and clench your teeth in preparation for what is to come. You look down as you see the guy with the instrument drop to one knee and place the business end of the branding gun right above your belly button. You close your eyes and hold your breath.

[-2] You now know what getting shot in the stomach feels like, though you're not sure you ever wanted to find out. Despite your best efforts, you are caught unprepared by the pain. Not the fact that it's there, but the magnitude of it. You keel over in agony, curling up in a fetal position as you wait for the horrible pain to end. It doesn't, at least not to a significant degree. You are, however, dimly aware that you are now lying in a small pool of your own blood.

"Okay, sweetie, that was step one. Now we do the cauterization! Wouldn't want you to bleed to death, would we?"

You shiver as one of the guys rolls you on your back, another two holding back your arms and legs to prevent any unfortunate movements as the gun is poked into your abdominal wound.

[-3] As the really painful feeling of your pierced abdomen is supplemented with a very pronounced sensation of burning, you blissfully pass out when the smell of your own burnt flesh reaches your nostrils. You feverishly dream of heated discussions about the proper use of quality power tools, beginning with reasoned arguments on both sides about whether a Marigold multisaw really is superior to a Hampton Technologies combination plasma cutter in matters of construction, however it soon devolves into people calling each other factory rejects and idiot naturals who haven't lifted a proper tool in their life, then somebody comes in and starts spouting random phrases that support both sides and invite any interested party to join him on a shopping trip for some shoes so real-looking, you almost can't tell that they're not from natural markets. It's all downhill from there.

However, before you can try to break up the awkward silence, you wake up. Your belly feels really sore, and you seem to be in an office of some kind - it's pretty dark in here (though a window lets some light in), and you're pretty sure you've been lying on a desk. You can see three of the guys from the guideways here, though where the others went you're not at liberty to say.

One of the guys appears to be messing with some kind of antiquated communications device - it looks familiar enough to you to guess at its purpose, if not its exact nature, it's probably one of those pre-network things. Another guy appears to be looking up a manual on medical treatment, occasionally adjusting a dial on his suit while a third appears to be napping contently. The entire room looks to be depowered, so you suppose you're still in the magnetic rail network somewhere, though it's difficult to say more.

((Alright, I guess this is some sort of resistance of engineered people that want to bring down the companies and so?))

Seek more information on Leaden Claw.  A reminder of the resilience of engineered creatures would be comforting under these trying circumstances.
