Against Chld Labor
« on: June 19, 2013, 10:08:03 pm »

So I've discovered why it's bad to make children work.

I assigned a child to cut wood for the first time ever, because I'm tired of those snotty bastards wasting space.

He was kidnapped 45 seconds later and carried away my only axe.  Curse you karma!

Children suck at removing walls. One time, the kid took a year
and a half to remove a single wall.

They're really only good for hauling and planting.

You let your children touch the precious pre-booze mass!?

I now have this mental picture of a 4 year old toddler crying and wimpering that it wants to go home, while an angry task master threatens severe lashings if it doesn't finish tearing down that massive masonry wall, with the pick axe as big as he is...

Urist McToddler:
"But its sooooo HAARRD!"

Urist McTaskmaster:
"You're the one who put your name on the job card kid! NOW BACK TO WORK!"

Urist McToddler:
"But I'm TIRED!"

Urist McTaskmaster:
"You can't go home until that wall is down, you little punk! BACK TO WORK!"

Urist McTodder:
"Whaaaaaaah! haaaaa..haaaa!"

Am I an evil man for taking pleasure in this mental picture? LOL

They're good miners as well. If you really like authenticity, then reserve all coal seams and gemstones for them to mine. XD

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My Fort's Children don't seem to mind destroying walls standing over the center of the Earth with no guard rails and several days of labour in the rain. Good thing DF doesn't model for slipping just yet.

Probably not, that's pretty goblin. I'd imagine it more to be like this:

Urist McToddler
'Oh my Cerol this is so much fun.'

Urist McTaskmaster:
'Wait, what are you doing? Don't scratch the walls, you'll make them uneven.'

Urist McToddler:
-Several days of scratching the wall later-

Urist McTaskmaster:
'OH GOD WHY IS EVERYTHING FALLING DOWN WHO WOULD DO THIS WHY-'

Urist McToddler:
'KOGANUSAN KOGANUSAN KOGANUSAN. THE WALLS WILL FALL.'

Now if you could make them cook, you could free up the adults for other labors. Though, it would be nice if we could get them to do any job, like an apprenticeship, since by default they all wind up legendary planters.

Yeah, maybe have the mother or father teach their child the trade?

Thadol Nimushlibok, Mason, has decided to teach his daughter Masonry.

Years later, Thadol assigning half of his work to his daughter...

Dastot Bomrekurist has grown into a Mason!

Thadol Nimushlibok is ecstatic. He admire a fine iron statue recently. He admired own iron chest recently. He has been caught in the rain lately. He has complained about the lack of a well lately. He has admired the result of his job as a parent.

That would be interesting. Even better if it can be done in a way that has the "teaching" just be the child watching their parent work, since most of them love following them around anyway.

I'm surprised that Toady hasn't made this kinda thing a game mechanic yet. Having the children learn jobs by following their parents sounds like a good idea, makes them less of a burden, and the generating happy thoughts from having a son or daughter doing good work sounds good too. Could be fortress saving if Urist McVeteranWarrior-turned-Stonemason begins getting depressed and his son makes a masterwork statue, making him go from almost tantrum to fine or better.

Pemmican is pretty incredibly durable. Corn and rice also lust forever without refrigeration.
Ah yes, the insatiable lust of corn and rice, clearly two of the most erotic foods.

Not to mention it would cut back the "children get useless stone/bone/woodcrafter moods" annoyance.

Please, please tell me that was a typo.

No wonder they're so "happy to be free" when kidnapped by goblins.
