The levels don't matter as much as you think for enemies. 2 health per level. That's it. Your big issue was that you decided to take on the physically oriented enemies, to which you have zero major defenses against. You would have honestly been safer taking on the black mandrakes.

We can look at hit point totals, if you want:

Our party has 58, 56, 38 and 32 hit points respectively. The average Green Mandrake has an HP stat of 14 and is level 4, giving it 50 hit points on average. The Orange Mandrake has an average HP stat of 18 and is level 5, giving it 64 hit points.

58+56+38+32=184 total party hit points. Average is 46.

64+64+64+64+50+50=356 total enemy hit points. Average is 60.

We can also look at stat totals:
The average Green Mandrake has 50 points distributed among his stats and the average Orange has 73 points distributed among his stats. Players have 52, 50, 51 and 50.

52+50+51+50=203 total party stats. Average is 51.

73+73+73+73+50+50=392 total enemy stats. Average is 65.

Capability wise:
The Green has 1/1/3 and the Orange has 4/1/1. Every player has a net of 0 capabilities. So the enemy has a 34 point advantage there total and a 6 point advantage over the average player in any given comparison of capabilities.

I don't know how big the enemy skills were, so I can't compare there. But a rough estimate says "pretty big" from what I saw.

Statistically, yes, they are superior. But they really wouldn't have been such a big problem if you guys were more physically oriented.

To be honest, the Orangies themselves had little to no magic defense-it was something like a rocket tag session, and they outnumbered us. Forgone conclusion. If I had gotten there in time, I would have rocked them with my gauntlets. And been rocked, in turn...

Hmm, lets take a look at or parties defenses in detail.

So aside from most of everyone being squishy, we're all extra squishy against phys attacks.

I know if had been there, I'd be capping off 1/3 an orange mandrakes HP a turn with my gloves. It might have turned the tide, tho...along with my heal. Or at least some tanking of hits.

I feel really bad for missing the session, now. I get the idea it was balanced considering my participation. <_<

Not really. Weird just grabbed a bunch of the enemies I genned up based on a selection everyone made. And since all they knew about the black mandrakes was "Death screams" they went for oranges, which they are squishy to. I'm totally stealing that chart for the player list, by the way, Dwarm.

Black Mandrakes Acid would have hurt alot less than Orange Mandrakes super death punches. B-Mandrakes suck a lot worse physically in all ways, we would have a great chance against them. Well, probably.

No it would have been bad either way. My fault for messing the the balance. I took two mandrakes out of the fight when people didn't show up. If you were in I would thrown two more at the party.
