So I installed Front Mission Evolved recently, I kinda fondly remember playing it ages ago and it was good mech fun, something that was clearly lacking on PC (and still is tbh). But forgot how many stupid things this game thus and how it's a real struggle to still enjoy it after putting up with the shit, because let's be honest, the gameplay isn't all that hot, it's only interesting because it's mechs, and even then you're forced into TPS sections with shitty gunplay.

Anyways, on with the things this games ticks off on the list of things that tick me off:
-Useless teammates, as in, you are almost always with someone after the first mission or two, and they're usually there to occasionally draw fire from you or spout random bullshit, they literally do zero damage, all of your squadmates do fuck all. It gets especially funny in one fight where you're up against two bosses and your squaddie jumps up to a building to provide sniper fire. She does no damage so you gotta do it all by yourself and you really gotta game it or hope that one of the enemies bugs out so you can deal with the other one in peace because on hard the fight is a fucking nightmare because of all the staggers and burst damage they have. Anyways, at the end of the fight they retreat and one of them comments how you two have good rythim. What good rythm, I did everything, that bitch just watched!
-Hey let's introduce this strong female charachter that has had a tough past and then just have her break down into a slobbering mess that's going to get protected by our hero before inevitably falling for him. And he falls for her because of reasons apparently. Also let's have every character be a single dimensional thing. So you got the black squad leader, who's obviously a psychopath because of the way he treats combat and killing. Then have the honorable guy spouting philosophical bullshit with every line. Also the crazy psycho mercenary girl who is just so delightful in her insanity, but also such a fucking trope that you can predict every line she'll ever say, and there's like, two or three of them, all varying degrees of stupidity.

There's more but I gotta go now and this is going to turn into a rant about the game rather than a rant about general peeves I have with games.

Well because Tough Girls are really just weak sensitive girls who need a big strong man to hold them tight and tell them that it will be all better in the morning... DUH!

Actually... as sarcastic as that was... That might just be the human condition.

Only a few people *never* need someone to be comforted by.  Of course, games always have to make it romantic or "bromance" which is a bit annoying.

I think it is more that they feel the need to sort of break away that tough exterior.

A tough person might need someone to hold them tight and say everything is going to be ok... But they typically are still a tough person while it is happening.

But a woman? Nope! you see with women being tough is like an act, a costume... They put it on and it is the heroes job to take it off. (JIC this is sarcasm)

Any real-time computer game based on a turn-based tabletop game. And any non-turn-based tactics game, especially if you control more than one unit.

Game shaming. Can't mention that you actually enjoy a mobile game (that isn't Crypt of the Necrodancer, anyway) or you'll have to turn in your gamer card, because only moms and small children play those filthy casual games, am I right?

the consuming shadow does not have vsync

I've used Game Maker Studio, you literally just have to tick a box that says "I want my game to have vsync" and bam, your game has vsync

Maybe vsync was a major performance hit in 5 B.C. but it's space year 2015, every game should have it

Screen tear is fucking obnoxious and ugly, it looks like the game is flying apart at the seams every time you notice it

guys, if you're making games, please please please include a vsync option

I don't know whether it'll work or not, but can you force VSync through your video card? I can use the Catalyst Control Center for my AMD card to turn Vertical Refresh on regardless of the games settings. Doesn't always work but maybe it's worth a try?

the consuming shadow

Are you playing the Insanity version? Cause on this note, the original version didn't have mouse support. So melee attack was bound to ctrl, and you couldn't change key bindings!

What kind of sick human being thinks of a control scheme like that?

I seem to recall the original version having mouse support. I found that kind of silly, since you can't aim or really do anything else with the mouse (besides menus), so you just kind of have your hand on the mouse in case you need to press the attack button.

My biggest problem with The Consuming Shadow is that it has somewhat insane auto-aim, to the point that you'll shoot at enemies you aren't even facing. If you're close to an enemy, you'll also automatically do a melee attack instead of shooting, which is a pain when you're trying to use armor-piercing bullets on a group of monsters. Yahtzee said in a Drown Out that he intended it to be an Android game, so it kind of makes sense in that context, but since it's PC exclusive I would have appreciated a more manual control scheme.

Just looked it up and you're right. What seems to have caused my confusion was that right/left click for melee and shoot aren't listed in the keybindings.

Still can't change key bindings though.

It's pretty obvious he didn't design it around mouse & keyboard. I don't remember the Android bit but he also said that he recommends game-pads.

I would have actually rather liked to see The Consuming Shadow as an Android game. The graphics look kinda simplistic on a big screen, but they'd be perfect for a phone-sized screen IMHO.

Ok here is one

Sneaking games where your character stands up from crouch to open doors.

It really bugs me in stealth games where the character MUST do things that break stealth even though they could probably find a way to do it without such risk.

I know the character is probably invisible when opening the door... but I have this little desire which is to be immersed in the world and forget I am playing a videogame.
