Look at Halo:  Absolutely no explanation for why there are multiple Spartans, and each one seems to be Master Chief.

If I remember correctly, they did retcon that Spartan Linda was there on the Pillar of Autumn with Master Chief.

Which, if I have to be honest, is one of the dumber things that was added in the novelizations. "Your hero is the last of their kind" is an interestingly emotional backstory element that isn't played up enough... not that it was ever mentioned in Halo, except for some blurb in the manual that was, as mentioned, quickly retconned.

Games that claim some thing, And don't give you any of it
Example: Crysis 3: Claims to be an 'open world' 'Sandbox like' game on the box, Xbox Live thing and advertising.... Then It delivers none of it with some what small levels and no Sandbox.

In all fairness the novels of Halo are so drastically different then the game that it honestly feels like a completely separate entity. For example did you know that every gun in Halo is supremely overpowered? Yeah you didn't know those grenades had the power of a nuclear bomb did you?

Well, according to a halo speedrun I once saw, the grenades are pretty good and important.

They're definitely not any kind of nukes, that's for sure. Even the (covenant) plasma grenades aren't really noticeably more powerful than the UNSC grenades - their chief advantage is that they don't bounce or roll, and can stick to people or vehicles. (The UNSC grenades are pretty much just bog-standard video game frag grenades)

Halo 1 should have had an official bumper cars mode. The Warthog was so bouncy and fun in that game that half the time in multiplayer I'd just jump it off of stuff anyway. xD

The thing that really bothered me about Halo(1) was the fact that UNSC vehicles transferred incurred damage to the driver. As in, shoot the side of a tank with a burst of plasma rifle fire, and the driver takes all of that. That pretty much defeats the entire point of a tank.

Strangely, Covenant vehicles did not do this, except in multiplayer.

I think it was only a portion of the damage?  But yes, still.
A side effect of the vehicles being utterly invincible (except for the covenant ones).

They didn't make the same mistake in the later games, at any rate. Your shields still apply to the vehicle, however.

Which is to say, in 3 and beyond, vehicles have HP and take visible damage (until they catch fire and shortly after explode) and you have HP too, but most of the games don't have health packs because if you get hit much while your shields are down you tend to die (and other than Halo 1, Halo: Reach, and Halo: ODST, you regain your health automatically since your armor in the other games includes healing stuff.)

Oh right, actually, I used to assume that that was a feature.  That the Spartan armor extended its shield through the chassis of the vehicle.

Even though the graphics don't support that, and unmanned vehicles are still invincible...  On launch, I was too excited for Halo to be fallible at all.

With one major exception, since this IS the Gaming Pet Peeves thread:
I, and my brother, are still ENTIRELY peeved that the PC ports of Halo 1 and 2 had no coop.

Absolutely arbitrary and a flipping shame, that is all.  Fortunately I never bought or played Halo 2 PC (played on a friend's XBOX).  We played Halo 1 coop on XBOX and it was TERRIBLE because I'm awful with XBOX controllers and it was fuzzy shitty console crap.  I had more fun playing PC deathmatch against him, despite him *always winning*.

But the single player was where it was at.  Almost as good as Marathon's story, and...
>.>
<.<
A hell of a lot prettier and generally better mechanics.  (I'm sorry, Marathon my love)

Halo 1 had almost as good story as Marathon? Did I miss something here? I remember Halo 1's story to be pretty basic to be honest. Sure, they expanded it to hell and back in the sequels and novels, but I don't remember the original game having much to its story. The gameplay was definitely good though, I'll give you that. And if you were referring to the Halo series as a whole, I would like to apologize in advance. They did do a lot of work on it after the first game came out.

Halo 1's story

You are some guy who never makes sarcastic quips or emotional dribble fighting aliens. The aliens have a super weapon that will mean vague doom to everyone. It is up to you, and only you, to stop them.

I am oddly becoming attracted to silent protagonists all over again. After the progression of Samus from awesome space marine to PTSD PMS woman who needs a man beside her or else she will wet herself... Or the progression from Isaac (from Deadspace) from engineer just trying to survive in what is basically space hell... to a jealous boyfriend in the third...

Mind you really how complicated a story is, isn't as important as how it pulls off its story.

---

GOODNESS has anyone noticed that when Silent Protagonists suddenly gain speaking ability... you usually immediately regret it? (and no I am not including Mario or Peach)

Okay yeah it didn't measure up to Marathon.  But!
It emphasized human grit and ingenuity in the face of overwhelming numbers of high-tech aliens.  It had capital-A Ancient technology behind everything that happened.  And in Halo 3 we learned of a kind L and pragmatic D.
(fuuuuuuuuck halo 4 I never played it and I want to unremember everything I learned of its story)

So I feel like Halo 1-3 did carry on Marathon's legacy, and I really don't say that lightly.

Master Chief is low on emotion because he's a player avatar... AND!
Because, as my brother recently pointed out, he's the ultimate enlisted soldier.  He's incredibly skilled and tactically aware, able to complete the mission at any cost.
... But, he can't plan a mission.  He NEEDS officers.  Leela Cortana needs to guide him everywhere.
And when she's captured, in what some may call a "damsel in distress" situation, she suffers yes...  But he suffers too.  Because suddenly he's without direction.  And he's watching EARTH be overrun, despite everything he's done.  They both suffer, until they are reunited...  And together, they finish the fight.

Marathon, and specifically the ending of 00, suggests a reincarnating hero.  See my signature.  And arguably they're both supposed to escape the eventual collapse of the universe.

Master Chief and Cortana, like the "security officer" and Durandal, play their role in the eternal conflict.  And they win, because the Hero always wins.  Along with his or her officer.
