The Terran empire in Warhammer 40K is fantasy Italian; mixing fantasy Roman with fantasy fascism.
The Imperium Of Man, not some puny Terran Empire, first.
Second, it's not fantasy Italian. It's fantasy science-fiction humanity. It's as much Italian as it is German, French, British or whatever else really. While the main "stream" is pretty much medieval Europe (Holy Roman Empire, aka damn Germany) in space, you could proably pick your fetish (dem muscular Spaniard "Crimson Fists" with... huge crimson power fists) and it exists in Wh40k, and if it doesn't, it proably can.
Honestly when was the last time you were playing a fantasy game and you saw Fantasy France or Fantasy Germany outside Dominions?
Nilfgaard from The Witcher is pretty much Fantasy Germany + Fantasy Spain + Fantasy Italy + Fantasy French. Actually, I have no fucking idea because they're pretty much all of it, but they're surely not your regular British.

Roman Empire is a nice fit for WH40k, imo.
Rapid expansion and conquering, followed by an age of decay and barbarian incursions.

There's no central leader (no, not him).  It's a multicultural empire ruled by an Oligarchy.  And the outer colonies are fairly independent, as long as they continue to tithe properly.
The Emperor's even an incapable yet divine figurehead, who gained his reputation by expanding the empire's borders.

Too advanced for that. Unless you mean Holy Roman Empire, then you're proably on point.

First, there is no such things as latin in 40k anymore. The latin is used because, well, it sounds medieval.
Second, they're more of religiously fanatic HRE, the ones that are in spotlight at least (I would argue that they're not fascist, it's kind of kritarchian oligarchy empire with totalitarian/theocracy face and protectionist economy fuck that, Imperium is basically everything at once).

Also, speaking of religiously fanatic HRE, there is this Polish series of books which basically describes life of an Inquisitor in medieval HRE... except in that world Jesus jumped off the cross with sword and basically conquered Europe. Understandably, the world is even worse place to live in than regular medieval HRE.

I know this is a bit... off topic to address it.

But frankly with the way a lot of Religious Fanatics talk... Jesus might as well have done just that.

Though honestly I've rarely seen a game actually handle religion in a non-black-and-white sort of way. If a religion is EVIL! it is either pretending to be good or they are stinken evil.

If a religion is good then they are good.

You never really see, say, a religion that speaks nothing but peace and kindness but the ruling body has transformed it into some sort of bastardization of what it once was to be used for their own bigoted agendas.

Or a religion that once spoke on length about vengeance and destruction eventually reinterpreted by pacifists in order to fulfill a peaceful agenda.

Note: Yes I know both of these exist... But it is just uncommon.

There is a Pet Peeve in there somewhere... But I am not sure how much "Overly derivative stories" are a pet peeve.

Both those possibilities sound potentially interesting, though.  If anyone can think of cool examples that'd be great.
I totally get why religion isn't presented that way in most games, of course.  For one thing, it's harder to write and it runs the risk of confusing gamers.  Secondly, I could see it really offending people.  A shame.

Political correctness. Certain religions (Islam) are offended by so non-existent problems (pig toys/whatever for children) that I can certainly see people losing shit over game. Especially if you can kill stuff there. I can imagine the outrage in media already. Like if we didin't have serious problems, eh.

The Chantry in Dragon Age might fit the first example, though I guess they're pretty evangelical to begin with. The religion is certainly "do good things" but the leadership is corrupt and self-serving, and don't exactly play nice with other belief systems.

The backstory in Dungeon Siege 3 also falls along those lines, but it is actually kind of wishy since the figurehead there is either some kind of elemental herself or a descendant of one.

The Fall Behind or Too far ahead in MMOs

MMOs are just flat out designed with the idea of leaving people behind...

I don't know why I ever bother playing MMOs.

Here are the tools now DON'T USE THEM!

Ok I HATE it when games give you tools and ask you not to use them for no other reason then "it would be too easy otherwise".

The two examples I have are
1) In Metal Gear Solid Phantom Pain... There are several items and abilities that if you use it makes it impossible to achieve S rank
2) In Trauma Center when operating on Tumors... Marking a tumor (as in making it easier to see) actually reduces your score... As well as using your time slow ability

Honestly it bugs me to heck!... It would be one thing if you should be avoiding their use at all costs (for example... If stopping time made you lose some of your lifespan... Yeah I can totally picture you losing points for using it)... But look at Trauma center. Performing the operation in the safest way possible makes you lose points.

And before you go "But they are just points". They also tell a story. The game is actively telling you that using them is incorrect somehow.

If you don't want the player using these abilities just don't give it to them. Make them an easy mode ability. Not a standard power or ability.

Yeah, I ran into that with Path of Exile. I talked myself out of all the others for all the other reasons.

But of course if there's no progression (either in story/quests, or equipment/powers/etc) everyone would get bored and quit playing, right? (I probably would, anyways, unless there's something really amusing to do)

If you don't want the player using these abilities just don't give it to them. Make them an easy mode ability. Not a standard power or ability.

That's pretty much what they did in Phantom Pain.  Except you don't have to go into an immersion-breaking menu and change reality to be "easy", you can even drag the stealth camo along on missions.  As long as you don't use it, people will still be really impressed and pay you extra for being a badass.

It really makes sense that Snake would show off by not using the most powerful gadgets.  What's a little weirder is that the mysterious clients care, and pay more :P
