7 Grand Steps - A Generational Strategy Game
« on: June 09, 2013, 01:14:05 pm »

I'm not pimping this game. I actually want to see if other Bay12ers have played it and whether it is any good. Sounds pretty awesome.

7 Grand Steps at Steam.

After the initial post, I see that they have a demo available on their website.

Description:

Family. Generations. The rise of western civilization. Survival means victory. The journey crafts your story.

7 Grand Steps is an abstract telling of the lives of our ancestors. Part board game, part machine, part nod to computer games of yore, it begins with a simple mechanic. Spend tokens to traverse the wheel of life. Earn tokens by tempting the jaws of death. Then, like layers upon a pearl, game play expands, allowing fresh tactics and strategies which, turn by turn, drive a sophisticated, emergent narrative. How you play defines the lives of one family's generations through the changing ages.

An enormous tableau of ancient western culture awaits your exploration:

Core Mechanic - Back and forth tactics, across four social boundaries, to win legend points.
Family Strategy - Romance. Raise children. Rite of Passage.
Family Drama - Tales in the life. Sibling rivalry. Failed branches. Graveyard of ancestry.
Grand Legends - Earned over generations, they strengthen your family: Discoveries and Invention. Social Advancement. Heroics.
Ruling Games - City Administration. Warring Kingdoms. Imperial Senate.
The Challenges of an Age - Special for each social level. Survive and overcome, to enter a new age.

After playing the demo, I am debating on buying. I enjoyed it. It's more of a board game with a story. It was fun. Demo is worth the time.

Suprisingly addicting and although it seems like it at first glance, it's not a repetetive game. Well, for the most part, at least.
Won't buy, though. Not until I get a job.

I have bought it and it is really fantastic. Reminds me of a mix between King of Dragon Pass and Civilization.

I also got the King of Dragon Pass vibe. I liked that.

Played for a couple generations, then the game crapped on me. Won't buy.

It's not really compareable to King of Dragon Pass (amazing game!) but it is a very nice time-sinking-singleplayer-board-game on PC :)
I really like it and buyed it after playing the demo.

The guy worked 4 years to get the game out and there are small bugs but if he is pointed to them he fix them too.

If he can finance the development then there will be 6 more games/steps with the other ages.

I think it would be nice to see it go further and I think in this forum here should be several people who could like this type of game.

I bought it as soon as I heard about it on RPS a few months ago. I love it. It's really addictive, though, and surprisingly lengthy. Once you master the mechanics of the "board game" part (which, admittedly, isn't particularly difficult), the ruling games also have a fair amount of depth, and there's 3 of them. My only complaint is that some of the random events can be pretty harsh, which is kind of the point, I guess.

Really looking forward to any potential sequel. I'd love to carry my family line over into the middle ages or modern times.

I think it is a little bit like the real world is ticking :)

But sometimes I'm not sure if the outcomes are (nearly) totally random or if there are good and bad choices I can make.

Sounds like I'll have to try out the demo, at least. Certainly sounds appealing.

I did wind up buying it. Spent four hours playing it last night. Made it through the first age. I really like it. Can't wait to get back on and continue.
