Getting closer and closer to release
« on: June 09, 2013, 10:20:15 am »

Checking the dev notes is getting more exciting, now that we're approaching release (we are approaching release, right?).

Every day is a day closer to release day, but I don't know if it's particularly imminent.

If we're lucky, end of the month. Realistically, some time late july.

Late July still sounds reasonable to me.  So yes, in the grand scheme of things we're getting very close.

I was hoping for late June/early July. How long does it usually take the Lazy Newb/DFHack and Dwarf Therapist people to adapt the mods to a new iteration?

He's been working on it for over a year, so it makes sense that we'd be really close. I can easily see late July/early August.

... dwarf fortress has been in alpha for eleven years.  It will not be in beta for probably another ten.  There are far, far too many features that they want to add in yet to even humorously consider finishing anytime soon.

#EDIT:  I'm an idiot.  Of course you mean the release of the next updated version, and not actual finished-game release.

The amount of time spent working on a thing is not a measure of that things completeness.

Don't worry, I read that as full release too.

My answer in my head was "hopefully sometime before I die." I'm 23, and even on that long a timeframe, I'm not particularly optimistic for a full release ^__^

I actually keep wondering if the game will be finished before Toady dies.

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

Short answer, no.

Long answer, He will continually reach milestones and he will continually add in new feature requests.  The game will most likely reach post beta version numbers at some point before critical author failure.  If by complete you mean will there be a version one then yes, but that wont be the end, not by a mile.

Pretty much.  Toady stopped adding new features a month or two ago and is currently in the cleanup phase where he fixes all of the problems he encountered along the way and polishes it to a releasable state.  He's apparently more than 20% done with that by number of problems to fix, but of course each problem is going to take a different amount of time to fix.

End of July is a slightly optimistic projection, but I'd be very surprised if it was later than August some time.

There's a user maintained list floating around somewhere, but off the top of my head:

Adventure mode sites for everything, not just humans.
Combat speed separation for moving and attacking.
Acceleration (adventure mode only?)
Jumping and climbing (adventure mode only?)
Multi tile trees.
Tracking (adventure mode only?)
Improved stealth mechanics (vision arcs, sound indicators; adventure mode only?)

There's probably more, but those are the big ones I remember.  As with .34.01, it's mostly adventure mode enhancements.  Toady has mentioned that fort mode will probably get a thing or two post release though, such as job priority changes.
