Stats are typically rolled in the following manner: Roll 4d6. Add together the three highest numbers. Repeat five more times. These numbers are each assigned to a stat of your choice. Some races and classes also grant bonuses and maluses to certain stats. These are added in after assigning base stat values. Every four levels, you also add one to a stat of your choice, starting at level 4.

So, uh, is there a kind of point-allocation system in terms of stats? The guide thing you linked me is a little bit impenetrable at parts, and it hasn't really helped me understand how to make a character at all.

Most of the starting stuff is listed on the first page of this thread, spoiler'd at the bottom.

Would have helped If I labeled it first...

We're doing 28 point buy here, but otherwise Remuthra is right.

And I usually use this

quick question: Exactly what kind of sword did I find? That pic you posted looks scimitar-ish, but it could still be a falchion, which would mean Durham would need to not be able to use his shield if I gave it to him

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

Alright, so I did what Remuthra said, but I only ended up with 26 points. Is that okay, or what do I do?

We're actually doing point buy here, sorry. You get 28 points to spend in a special formula Dwarmin directed you to. Point buy gives greater control of power levels.

Use the point buy calculator he posted and change your stats until the points are 28

I'm the silliest man.

I still don't exactly see how that's a formula, but who am I to do things?

So do I just choose it all by my lonesome, or do I have to sacrifice a goat to the gods and inscribe its blood upon a clown's bare chest, which will reveal the secret to me?

That comes later. The complicated part of point buy comes from the fact that the higher you raise a stat the more it costs to raise it more.

Posting to watch/possibly waitlist. I'm thinking about possible classes right now...

Regarding point buy: You start with all ability scores equal to 8. Then you may pay points to increase abilities, up to 14, on a one-for-one basis. To increase to 15 from 14 or 16 from 15, it costs two points. To increase to 17 from 16 or 18 from 17, it costs three points. You can only go up to 18 this way. Then you apply racial modifiers. You can't lower ability scores below 8.

So, that means I use them all at the start, or that you should reserve them for later or something?

Also, sorry if this turns into pages and pages of the Explain the Very Basic Rules to the Newbie game.

Nope, just spend the points now and get your stats. From there, we move on to health and skills.

You use them all when you make your character.

If you need more help, I can help on irc://irc.darkmyst.org/bay12dnd
(If you don't have IRC installed, you can go to http://client00.chat.mibbit.com/ then for server choose DarkMyst, then for channel type in #bay12dnd. Any nick works.)

Alright, I think I'm fine with what I've come up with...now, for more extreme basics of a game you guys know much better than me!
