With GW's business history thus far, the price of miniatures will only go up once they buy a 3D Printer. They'll tell us that this is to offset the high cost of high quality 3D Printing.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

It will until people realise the obvious answer; get all those you know who enjoy this kind of stuff to chip in on an awesome 3D printer. Then GW will have to lower their prices to compete.

I don't think that's entirely true. Counterfeiting the models isn't actually legal, and buying a 3D Printer is, for the time being, more expensive than just buying your own army. Factor in the cost of the master (though I guess you could get the .stl files off the internet), and you don't have a particularly cost-saving strategy.

Consider also that counterfeit resin models are available on the black market. These are indistinguishable from real models once painted. GW has responded by spreading rumours about how they check for this at their tournaments. They don't, and they haven't done anything but raise their prices.

I think if 3D printing leads to mass piracy, GW will only continue to raise their prices, and blame it on the pirates.

I don't understand your point at all. Besides it being a non-sequitur, it would be far cheaper to bust out three hundred Lego minifigs and use them as a 'counts as' IG-legion than it would be to buy a 3D printer.

Amusing thing is, this is already being done with GW's much-ignored Epic: Armageddon line, 6mm scale miniatures that GW has pretty much left in the dust to focus on their 3 core lines. You'll see this with a lot of the 'Specialist Games' that they stopped actively supporting, fans picking up and continuing support for what GW refuses to do, as seen in this forum, and this subforum for the miniatures.

Might be a bit late to the party, but I've got a roughly 1000 pt 6th edition Tyranid force.

Hive Tyrant:
-Bonesabes
-Lash whip and Bonesword (Yes, I know this violates the rules. My friend that I play against does crap like this all the time, so I figure it's fine for me to do it ONCE.)

Tyrannofex:
-Acid Spray
-Electroshock grubs
-Spine salvo
(Two template weapons, one a ranged template (wut) and then a four shot, strength 5 assault weapon. Against guardsmen, this thing is utter rape. Against SM, it's pretty threatening. Did I mention this beastly son of a bitch has 6 toughness, 6 wounds, 2+ save, and regeneration? Because fuck your infantry.)

Warrior brood:
-Scything talons
-One Venom Cannon, one barbed strangler (ssssssh), and then one with rending claws. Three warriors total.

Genestealers with Broodlord:
-10 'stealers, with a broodlord. Fuck your characters.

Termagant posse:
-Roughly 30 termagants

One hormagaunt, one ripper base, three spore mines. And five of those little ground-pucker-orifice thingies that you get with EVERY fucking Tyranid sprue, yet has no discernible usage.

My friends army?

10 man tactical squad with missile launcher, heavy bolter, and flamer.
5 man assault squad, with a plasma pistol. The sergeant has a storm shield and power sword.
'Command squad' of nine marines, with various power weapons (A power axe, power fist, two power swords) an apothecary and maybe something else I forgot. Oh, right, the guy with the power axe is a Captain with artificer armor.
Terminator Chapter Master with Power sword and storm bolter.

To say I outnumber him is a bit of an understatement.

The Tyrannofex sounds like...mmmm...like a very, deliciously juicy target...for my Railguns. And Rail Rifles. And Heavy Rail Rifles, too. And we mustn't forget Plasma Rifles. Or Ion Accelerators. Seems tough, sure, and against Lasguns or Bolters I'm sure it is.

Then again, I'm probably prejudiced towards myself, and template weapons are quite effective against my infantry, if it's AP4 or better.

I'd like to get back into 40k, I really enjoyed playing it on Vassal.  I mostly played Chaos Space Marines, a thematic Tzeentch army.

My problem is that I'm incapable of looking past all the glaring flaws.  I look at tournament records showing the last three armies to get new books winning 90% of the matches, all the cheese and the expensiveness of the minis, and it just turns me off the whole thing.

Maybe if they ever stooped to making a computer version I'd play it.  But there's no way I'm getting into actual tabletop 40k and every time I want to play Vassal 40k I talk myself out of it.

Similar feelings here.  I let the Dawn of War computer games scratch the itch for me for a while, but they're not exact copies of the table top game and have some quirks of their own.

Every time I consider getting back into 40K, I start reading about things that have changed and I can't bother myself to try to catch up.  As a space marine player, I generally don't look that closely when other armies are drastically changed (like Necrons), but even the marines have had some pretty strange things added to their army lists.  Storm Ravens bother me a bit (the design is a bit strange and their role in a marine army seems suspect) and dreadknights just felt like a slap in the face for some reason.  I saw a picture recently of something else dreadknightish that looks like it'll be something between terminators and dreadnoughts and will be available to all marine army lists.  I just don't understand why they were even necessary.

Maybe I'm just becoming the old grumpy guy who doesn't like change.

While there is power creep, some people did a test by putting together the data from hundreds of tournaments(I believe), and found that you're only 5% more likely to win in tournaments with newer books.

In fantasy, it's around 36% though, which saddens me as I think I would have liked it more.

All it's weapons are AP4, except maybe the Spine Salvo, that might be AP5.

In other news, I'm currently undecided on what to get.

This or...

... This.

Sadly, if I get the fuckhueg swarm of gaunts, I will probably need to buy a couple Zoanthropes, or a posse of warriors, or maybe another Hive Tyrant, that I will model as a Swarmlord (He costs as much as a Land raider, but paroxysm + WS9 is fucking sexy. ((Paroxysm reduces enemy WS TO 1 on a successful psychic test.) Not to mention, his weapons are all fucking force weapons that don't need to roll a psychic test, they just inflict instant death on unsaved wounds. And he gets a 3++ invulnerable in close combat. And he's a Mastery Level 2 Psyker with four powers, meaning if I get Iron Arm and Warp Speed... Well, let's just say that entering melee combat with him becomes a glorious exercise in idiotic suicide.)

As it is right now, I completely outnumber my friend, and ever so slightly outgun him. But all his guys have armor saves of 3+ or better. I still need more dakka though, I have quite enough choppa. So I suppose I could get a Carnifex, and give him four Brainleech devourers and enhanced senses. 12 assault strength 6 shots that reroll missed to hits on a 1? Yes please.
