Try getting the rebel settlements on mainland's shore, like Antwerp... then maybe owning Denmark.

My army is almost completely disbanded now, and I wouldn't want to anyway. France is my ally, and I don't want to go to war with them for as long as possible. Compare defending France to defending Denmark and you'll see why I'm hesitant to go there just yet.

Iberia and Sweden/Norway/Denmark are more defensible and strategic. Plus: Taking Iberia gives me a great place to war with France from if it comes to that.

Taking Rheims/Caen/Bruges/Antwerp might give me a bit of territory, but it will also get me into a war I don't want to fight right now if I don't garrison them properly. And garrisons take money. And money takes taxes. And taxes hinder growth, putting me in a worse long term position.

The settlements are also too small and poor now to make sacking and abandoning worthwhile, even if I had an army.

Hmm... The Iberians have been nothing but rude to you so far anways. Perhaps it is best plot revenge against them for not wanting those trade agreements.

It's quite profitable, but you will inevitably be dragged into fighting off the Byzantines, and then the Turks and Hungarians, and then the world.

Wrong. Being on the offense fixes every single issue you may have in Total War games. From overpopulation to bankruptcy.
As long as you don't actually lose a battle, which is a challenge on its own. Some say that it's possible.

There is a clear misconception regarding defense. You don't garrison the cities separately, you make an army to strike all incoming armies, that you discover with spies and towers. Siege defense shows far too many nasty flaws of the AI in all TW games ,except the newest Shogun, so to defend a siege, means slaughter endless stacks of moronic AI with 4 word's worth of combat scripting.

Being: "Go die by gate."

I've seriously defended against a full stack of enemy units because every single one of them rushed one of my three gates. I only had four units, just enough to defend that one. Pikes up front, galloglaich to the sides, bowmen on the wall above. Kill until they run away.

So uh, field battles are a bit more fun in my opinion.

The only time I ever got close to losing a city siege was with the Mongolians... And that is because they bumrushed Jerusalem with an army you just can't hold back. I was able to force them back after defending the gate though, meaning that their calvary were useless.

Otherwise, the only way I lose sieges is when I make the foolish mistake of thinking that peasants make a proper defence force. Ohohoho, those silly peasants!

A Scottish-Polish alliance... Undoubtably a recipe for success! Considering they are very far away from you, it may be a good idea to solidfy this fruitful relationship. Give them your eldest daughter's hand in marriage! Or wait... Are there any Scottish Princesses? Hmm... When you get the chance, introduce us to the royal family.

On another note, those blasted Moors must pay for their alliance with the dreaded King of England. They will pay dearly for this!

Beware, enough turns pass in this post to outdate the family tree. And considering the pace of a Total War game, it's not practical to constantly update it.

It appears that I've screwed up saving.

You know what, this is the perfect opportunity to do something fresh and hip! Await the next update with bated breath, it'll be a good one.

Re: Defence

In any total war game you HAVE to fight enemies that constantly outnumber you. In order to successfully defend your cities you need bloated garrisons, which you literally cannot afford. The only way to effectively fight wars is to constantly attack otherwise your economy goes to shit supporting your diffuse troops. ALWAYS concentrate forces. The game lends itself to massive battles for control of areas. Use it. Make a stack and then start using the hell out of it. One stack should be enough to blitz Rheims/Paris/Angers because they are close together and you can spam shit troops from Caen to garrison what you've captured.
