On the one hand, relatively easy access to early Dark Souls 2.

On the other, that shit /is/ bannable by Steam.

I am well aware that the odds of being banned for it are really, really low, but on the other hand I am equally well aware that getting to play the game ~11 hours early is not worth the potential though unlikely loss of an account worth quite a lot.

Normally, I wouldn't even be looking in this topic but I wanted to take a bit of a risk spoiling myself to see if the VPN thing is going around.

The Japanese version as far as I know is completely separate from the ROW version most people bought on steam. Depending on what version you ended up with using a VPN may not save you 3 hours of waiting. 3 hours isn't worth potential account issues.

Got home from work, boot up Steam like I usually do, see "DARK SOULS II AVAILABLE NOW" plastered at the top of the store page. Question marks???

I had already pre-loaded it on Monday, it's downloading something right now. "Ready to play in approximately 15 minutes"

I'll report back in ~15 minutes

EDIT: The real Dark Souls starts here

What did they do to my precious kick?

They changed the animation a bit, which I suppose is fine, but the timing? I'm using the same button inputs and timing as I did in DS but no dice. Occasionally I can get it to work but it seems completely arbitrary.

Oh, 60 fps is glorious by the way

Yeah, I miss kicking to. I know Guard Break has the same effect, but it just isn't as fun.

It's not as fun when it doesn't even use an input method that would actually make sense. Flicking the stick forwards while hitting the button is how it worked in DS, and testing a bit right now in DS 2 it seems you have to hit the attack button fractions of milliseconds after you flick the stick. This also applies to the jump attack by the way.

Crap. Just started it on my laptop, joyfully noticing it runs faster than DS1. Get to the old firekeepers, complete character creation, then

"Framerate too low for online play. Switching to offline mode.
Invasions, Coop, and messages disabled."

Guess I can't multiplay no matter where I play :(

EDIT: And fog walls look awful with the settings turned down a bit. They're just a plane with the foggy texture on it, and the texture isn't even moving or anything. Just a garish, glowing wall.

EDIT2: Not really complaining, though. Don't have to go home to play this anymore :)

Odd, Darksouls 2 isn't picking up my Controller...

Holy crap, did anyone else suddenly find a bunch of really good items on their new PC characters? I got a whole bunch of stuff, there's a "yellow quartz" longsword and shield among them.

You mean the pre order bonus gear? Console pre orders got that too.

Oh. I didn't know there was a preorder bonus, I just bought the PC version on monday. I hadn't seen it on my console character, since it's only a rental disc.

Thinking of respecing my Greatshield Uber Tank into a Zweihander wielding Pyro, similar to my DS1 char.
So I guess, before I potentially make a terrible mistake:
Is the Zweihander still as much a boss as the first game, and:
Do Pyromancies scale with intelligence for cereals? I've heard they do, and just want to make sure before I dump points into being smart.

Gotta say. If this is the best From Software can do for PC configuration, I'm disappointed. Graphic settings at least are what you'd expect out of a PC game. But the PC input scheme, while not as bad as the first game, is again completely hamfisted. You can't even configure your thumb buttons, and the way things are actioned out is clunky. I was really looking forward to not having to use my controller but I'm guessing, once again, that's the only way DS can be played unless you're willing to forgo half the conveniences of M+KB. Why yes, I'd love to have to hit two keys on two different devices to switch a weapon.
