Buffalo is quite tasty.  Squid is also good.

Huh, guess I never considered venison non-standard meat, but I love eating it when I can.

Oh yeah, my parents have deer a lot since they know a guy. But I've only ever been in town when they've made chili with it - I keep asking them to make deer steaks while I'm around so I can taste the meat by itself, but it never works out.

Yeah, I didn't really think about deer being "unusual". I like venison in a chili or stew. I've also had elk, which was just like a really big cut of venison.

Duck, turkey, quail, pheasant....I consider all those standard (especially turkey).

Rabbit is indeed similar to chicken.

No one seems to have mentioned squirrel yet, though I'm sure I'm not the only one who's had it. I remember it being a dark meat, a bit greasy but very tender. I've also had turtle (snapper) and squab, but it was so long ago that I don't remember the flavors. My grandfather hunted and trapped, but he was the only one in my family.

What's standard or not is pretty varied depending on the person, I'm sure. I never considered most game to be non-standard when I was a kid, but to hear some people talk...

I'd like to try some sort of insect eventually.

I'd probably add deer and rabbit, possibly even goat, to my list of standard meat only because I hear more about it than others.
I think non-standard would be anything unusual; something you'd try once (or more times if you liked it).
Sadly 'roo is the only "unusual" meat I've tried.

Frog: Like chicken, when lightly breaded and fried.

Snail: Kind of like a thick cut of really tender, slimy beef.

Alligator: Like greasy chicken when deep fried.

Octopus: Like rubber. It doesn't really have a flavor to me, other than earthy and brine-y hints.

My grandfather grew up eating the occasional squirrel and opossum. Possums are apparently quite greasy.
Goat's good, I've had some awesome goat curries, both Jamaican-style and Pakistani-style.

Squid and eel are good. Duck isn't really "non-standard", but it's scrumdiddlyumptious. What about the grey cardboard-foam substitute meat?

I absolutely love squid jerky.  Other than that, I haven't had much in the way of "non-standard" meats.

I don't know if it's non standard but I love cow tongue sandwiches. Better than ham any day.

I've also had rabbit, but venison and rabbit and pheasant, grouse etc are standard out here. I think venison burgers are fantastic.

It's not meat, but I've also had snake wine. Which is a polite way of saying "rice vodka with a snake drowned in it, for flavor". Not bad stuff actually, rather sweet and licorice-like. Reminded me of Drambuie. Supposed to be good medicine in the winter to prevent chest colds and the like.

Do you know what Drambuie means? I know it's unrelated but it may interest you. "An dram buidheach" - the drink that satisfies. That's also quite interesting. Where did you drink it? I've heard of something like that out in Southeast Asia somewhere... Laos I think.
