Have you every tried any of the "non-standard" meats?

And I'm not talking anything to do with cannibalism either.
I'm legitimately curious if anyone here, and hence elsewhere in the world, has eaten any of the other types of meat that can be purchased legally.

I myself have tried kangaroo and the taste is, well...similar to beef except more "subtle". My cousins fiancée told me that you had to cook it extremely raw otherwise its pretty much screwed and inedible. I can't say that I liked it, but I also can't say that I didn't like it however I won't be having it again.
So, what about you guys?

I've had buffalo. It's pretty similar to beef, though I think it's a bit more flavorful.

And alligator. When everyone tells you it tastes similar to chicken, they're not lying. It has a fishier texture, though.

I used that as a figure of speech. Beef, chicken, pork. Possibly a few others but that's what I'm thinking of off the top of my head. In other words "what animal's have you eaten?" could be a better question.

Isn't it meant to be snakes that "taste like chicken"? I haven't heard that mentioned about alligators or crocodiles.

I think reptiles in general taste similar to poultry, being relatively closely related.

Close, but not really;

Chicken tastes like muscle meat. Hence lots of stuff tastes like chicken.

I'm a fan of the soy-hen, and its many varied preparations.

Also buffalo. Sort of a gamier beef. Duck is like a heavy, fatty chicken. Very good. Does seafood count? Squid is always tasty, shark isn't bad (only had that once, though, and pretty heavily seasoned so I can't be sure). How about organ meat? Pig brains and cow hearts are both delicious, and of course one can't forget chicken gizzards and hearts. Pig stomach isn't half-bad, either. Marrow bones add a lot of flavor to soups, but I can never use them fast enough to keep from having some spoil.

Dog, boar, snails, buffalo, bison (isn't duck standard ? it's quite common). Nothing really original.
And yes, quite a bit of seafood and organs too.

Kangaroo -- thought it had a rather rich, beefy flavor. Bit rubbery texture though.

Alligator -- Did not like. Too fishy-tasting.

Rattlesnake -- Had as sausage, quite tasty.

Buffalo/Bison -- good flavor, have to be careful not to overcook as the meat is very lean and dries out quickly

Frog -- Kinda slimy. Small bones got annoying too.

Cuttlefish -- Only had as dried, spiced jerky. Not bad, but you're mostly tasting the spices.

Jellyfish -- DID NOT LIKE. Could feel a somewhat unpleasant numbing sensation in my mouth as the occasional intact nematocyst triggered and stung me. Not a lot of flavor, texture was like unpleasantly raw calamari.

Squid -- When cooked correctly, squid is awesome. When overcooked, it's a bouncy chew toy. When undercooked, it's Cthulhu's Revenge.

Eel -- Only had barbecued, but it's damn good.


Things I've passed on:
Scorpion (on a stick) -- A Beijing delicacy. While I love shrimp and realize that one fried arthropod is really not that different from another....dude. Dat pincer and claws.  :o

Dog -- Found a dude grilling large paws in a Beijing alleyway. Probably St. Bernard, which is a common meat breed in north China. Oddly enough, not that many (north) Chinese eat dog and it's actually taboo among the Manchu. It's mostly for the local Korean population and the curious tourists.






If we're going into organ meat, I was raised eating pork brains fairly regularly as a breakfast food with scrambled eggs. Also chicken hearts with dumplings.

You must have had an overcooked kangaroo - if I remember correctly my cousins fiancée said that's what happens when you overcook it.

Oh yeah, I'm pretty sure I've had camel in sausage. But it was really heavily seasoned, so I don't really know what the meat tastes like.

I've also had frog legs. They're always delicious. Very unique.

And they serve scorpions in China? Dang. I need to head over there sometime.

Monkey brain: unpleasantly slimy.

Snake: Really nice - like a light or soft pork.

Hippo: OMNOMNOM! A fatty, salty pork.

Horse: Like beef.

Camel: Kinda tough, similar to venison.

Zebra: Like horse.

Kangaroo: A bit like rabbit.

Gator: like a meaty tuna, or swordfish.

Wildebeast: Same as beef.

I hunted dear when I was a kid to have something to eat.

Rabbit hutches ... meat, pelts, and cats really like the feet and ears in particular.

Deer has somewhat of a gamey taste, though truthfully I was just happy to have anything at the time.

Rabbits taste kind of like chicken. To me they taste slightly more bitter than chicken, but not in a bad way. The people I've given meat to tell me they don't get why I think it's a little more bitter than chicken. [shrugs].

I've had sushi on dates before.
Eel seems kind of rubbery to me.
Octopus is sorta chewy.
Tuna and other fish, raw, are more of the "standard" sushi things so.... [shrugs]

I've had moose and bison, but I'm not sure they count as non-standard.  Moose was too long ago for me to remember what it tasted like, bison isn't bad.

I guess squid and eel is non standard?  I've had lots of both.  :D  Love me some Calamari.  :D
