Filled in, but isn't it a bit of a skewed sampling like this? Well, you probably know what you're doing, it's probably alright for this particular bit of research, whatever it is. Anyway, more data for you, and I also shared it on Facebook in hopes of getting more people to throw in some more.
Yes assuming this was the only place it was advertised, high bias. However I'm sure that a masters student like Pyro would know to sow their survey widely.

Thanks a lot!
I have actually posted this across a number of gaming forums, thought I have more of a bias towards management games in the forum choices as this is the area of people I am interested in.

I'll try and get this paper online if I can (all IP rights belong to my uni, bleh) if anyone is interested.

Well, it would still not exactly be the random sample you would typically want. But I suppose many of the questions kind of require that you at least play some of the games listed, so it actually makes sense. And you're right, which is why I said they probably know what they were doing.

Thanks a lot!

You're welcome. And that makes sense.

I would like to read the paper if it's done. Your post actually already made me add "emergent gameplay" to the list of topics I would like to still read articles/books on, so your paper would probably fit in nicely (even though as you said, it's more about emergent narratives... which interest me too, anyway).

well, you have my data such as it is. I was expecting a somewhat longer questionnaire though. Not sure why, but 12 questions seem short for a Master's thesis data collecting, unless there's a lot of other sources you are developing in addition to the questionnaire...

No wait, that's just post midnight talking.

Well today I just got two responses with incorrect control question answers.

That's pretty much it. You can't prove anything with questionnaire results. These are just being used to add weight to an argument, or remove weight as it may be.

It's difficult for me to fill it out.

For basically all of the statements (I'll use "A game should follow a pre-written story" as an example), I really have no idea how to respond. Some games (like DF) are awesome partly because they doesn't have a pre-written story, but I can easily imagine other games being awesome partly because of engaging pre-written stories that the player jumps into. I'm not indifferent, because particular games will be more or less suited for pre-written stories.

Are we supposed to assume that every statement is referring to construction games? To only the construction games that we've personally played?

This is for management games and this is to get an idea about how you feel about game narrative in these sorts of games. Have you had better experiences in management games that left you to it (DF) or games that guided you down a narrative route (Tropico)?

Data core assimilated. Transmitting data to central command... COMPLETE.

I just realised that about half of those questions change based on what genre, or even series, of games we're talking about. In an RTS, storyline and character immersion isn't as important to me as constantly changing events and a sense of realistic city life.

In an FPS, storyline and character immersion are the most important aspects of the game for me. I couldn't care less about the other NPC's because I know that they won't die unless they're scripted to, or they're bad guys that I need to swat like flies.

You know S.T.A.L.K.E.R. had an interesting differentiation from this in the A-Life system. All the creatures and NPCs had lives of their own and went about doing stuff off screen and in the background. Though in order for this to be a major part of a game I'd imagine significant development time would be put into natural language for the characters to have any kind of believability to their dialogue, and perhaps vocalisation. When I'm playing an FPS I'm normally turned off of long lengths of text and I am sure others are too.
Though in counter to this people seem to get really involved with the activities of their dwarves even though their actions and thoughts are pretty repetitive in the sentence construction.
