Okay, since when did Star Trek show exploding heads and alien creatures ripping out people's torsos?
Just saw TNG's Conspiracy. Good lord O_O

Ahhh, that one.

As far as I know, it's the only episode which needed that special 'adult themes warning' thing when it first aired in TV.

It was just so unexpected, is all. The online version didn't include the warning, so when the dude didn't simply fall over but freaking exploded it was quite shocking.

Was that when the writers went on strike?

No, that was when the writers were at their worst. It gets better from Season 3 onwards.

The end of Season 3 of TNG is probably what established it as a major series, and it was a really big deal at the time. I was just old enough to remember it when it first aired... or moreover remember my folk's reactions. I don't think I really processed what was happening, but I remembered the buzz when I was older and caught the reruns.

After watching the first movie and seeing Spock kissing Ahura... (and two other scenes)

I just don't want to see Into Darkness. Sometimes about the series just doesn't sit right with me, it is like its littlest mistakes are somehow huge.

A quote I saw on another forum summed it up well for me

Wrath of Khan spoilers enclosed

Unless of course they don't fit properly and your feet blister up like bubble wrap.
Oh ho ho, but don't try to return the shoes, because they won't take them back once you've worn them.
Especially if that fat pig Tony is at the desk.

Wrath of Khan is the only movie in the Star Trek franchise that lives up to the standard set by Wrath of Khan. It's the high water mark that everything else has never beaten -- though some have come close. And the new movies are definitely not the first movies of the franchise to go in the direction you're talking about.

Not that I don't disagree with all of the quoted points, but they should use an average Star Trek movie instead of the pinnacle of the series to make comparisons.

What, you don't consider The Journey Home the pinnacle of the series?  Heretic!

The Journey Home is like, the #2 movie in the franchise for me. It's also home of one of the best punk songs of all time (Some NSFW lyrics...).
