Virtual Environment/Reality
« on: March 03, 2013, 04:02:39 am »

I suppose there isn't a current thread for this, of course, a person with decent search-fu *might* be able to find a thread specifically talking about VE/VR (I prefer to call it VE, but I suppose it sounds a bit pretentious)

I think that the subject fascinate me, personally because I'm overall interested in anything related to simulation (incuding games, but these days those cheap empire simulation games annoy me), and virtual environment hold a special place in my heart, and when I was a kid I might think that I would probably never live long enough to see it come to fruition, but now it is obvious that the thing already existed, and will keep getting better.

One of the things that many people seem to be concerned about, including me, are haptic systems, AKA virtual tactile. While people are concerned about the ethical problems with virtual pain, I think it will inevitably be made sooner or later anyways, probably by the military, and it would be a no-brainer then to just use them. I'm one of those people who wonder what it would feel like if you feel pain whenever you get hurt roguelikes.

I think sooner or later we will need to rely on nerve linking to make tactile simulation work properly, this might mean that we won't be able to use them in this generation, or it might just mean that we only had to be pretty wealthy.

And while I await for the real thing, I am adventuring in the virtual environment using the old technology we call Lucid Dreaming, but I can understand the taboo with it, what with being incredibly difficult to do properly and all.

I figure they won't use realistic pain, but a duller sensation which is still unpleasant. Feeling your arm chopped off or your bowels impaled when you screw up would probably turn people off of a game.

As I explained in another post, my knowledge isn't exactly full, but I'm pretty sure we could make realistic virtual reality simulation with current technology, but it would be easier to tap into the nervous system.

Yes, that problem come up a lot, but part of the torture come from the fact that you're scared of getting hurt, so getting tortured endlessly without real wounds, if you ask me, shouldn't be much of a problem for stronger-willed people.

I've had surgery done without anesthetics, and even though it had no risk and was being done by a professional it was still probably the most horrible things I've ever experienced. I might just be weak-minded, but I don't think that's all. :P

I can imagine a hardcore pain-tolerant/masochistic segment of the gaming population that sneers at lesser gamers who turn off the pain stimulators.

Well you couldn't squirm or else it might fuck everything up.

But even though I'm for pain simulators I would probably tone it down a lot except when PVPing.

Pain even if it is not real is going to take its toll...  if you have the pain setting at real life.  Otherwise, if it is something much less impactful, yea, it 'shouldn't' be a problem for 'stronger-willed people'.  If you ignore the 'endless' part of the statement...

Still, there needs to be some sort of HP/Life indicator.   Unless they somehow use a DF-centric wound system...

DF-centric wound system...
Marvelous!
Though really, the chance for people to quite literally detach from reality would reach great new proportions.

This is something kids should quite literally be legally banned from using. Developing mind in an enveloping world is dangerous.
