Anyway, new update is out, servers are down

On a positive note, the updated plane unlocking mechanism was changed. You no longer need to get all modifications for the previous plane, but doing so will be faster.

I honestly don't much care for any of the progression stuff, but the rest of the update seems pretty solid. New planes and new maps, plus rendering options.

cannon fodder for dying 666 times.
I am getting a little bit closer to that title, for every match I play.
And yes, I die at least once per match.

I see so much talk about dogfihgts, but I just reached level 5 on my first country (USA) and am level 3 in Britain. My main method to get xp is just mass bombing as I'm not that good at dogfighting. Any tips for dogfighting or leveling up?

Nothing wrong with being a bomber pilot. I was a dedicated torpedo bomber for quite some time in IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946!

That said, especially in arcade mode you should make sure to go for targets you know can't out-turn you, and then you simply try to keep your gunsights on the targeting pip on the enemy (select enemies with MMB). Also, take care not to overheat your weapon, since that can drastically reduce the time you have to shoot the enemy.

I tend to prefer surviving to getting that kill... keep your awareness, look around before engaging, and go for someone who will likely not get help.

Without knowing what's failing for you it's hard to suggest anything :)

Playing bomber is especially fun if you have a few friends playing on the server to. Make a dive, get an enemy on your tail, and get an assist as he's promptly taken down a few seconds later.

On a side note, I've been playing with the Russian bombers recently, and have acquired the only torpedo bomber the Russians have. Divebombing is fun too, but I want to try out the other thing too.

Now I just need to unlock all modifications for said bomber before I can install the torpedo.

US planes are power fighters and their tactics are more or less like this:
Gain height
Find someone below you that you want dead
Swoop down guns blazing
Kill or not immediately try to gain height and retreat after the attack since your plane is likely bad at turnfighting.

British planes can spend their time in a turnfight tho espacially spitfires.
And the beufighters are suprisingly agile for heavy fighters.

Yeah, you don't dogfight in US planes. You fly in and shoot them for a second or two while you can and then you run, because unless you're facing a really shitty German plane you're probably not out-turning anyone, at least not long enough to kill them.

Or if you're in a Thunderbolt you go head-to-head and shred them.  :P

Oh, yeah, what does everyone think of the AI that can actually fly worthwhile planes? I, for one, am slightly terrified at the prospect of stuff like P-40s just straight up ignoring altitude limitations.

Some maps had spits and hurricanes if im not mistaken and they didnt seemed as broken as the biplanes. I dont know what to expect to be honest.

Well the good news is they're now actually worth the points to kill. The bad news is they're a bit more of a threat. They're still not as dangerous as actual players (unless they ram you) but they've got bigger, better guns to slowly chip away at your plane and faster, tougher planes to come at you with.

I haven't really dug into it yet, but I'm not really sold on the new research system. What does everyone else  think? I likes the sound of it from the Dev blog, but looking at it in game it looks daunting. Also the new color scheme is terrible.

Haven't actually played yet, but it sounds interesting. It's basically the same system as before, only more gradually and more controlled.
