Fair warning: SS13 is a game that requires a heavy time investment to play. 2+ hour rounds are not unheard of, depending on the server you're playing on. It's also entirely possible for you to die in the first few minutes and have your body spaced, ruining your chances of getting cloned or borged and rejoining the game. Or you'll simply sit around and twiddle your thumbs for an hour or two, at which point the shuttle is called and you go home peacefully (as the traitors had worked silently and efficently). And that's not talking about the problems with the interface, combat or simply learning the game (it took me an embarassing amount of time to figure out how to eat food).

But then again... Within all of that wasted time, there are a few hidden chunks of gold that make it all worthwhile. I remember getting lost in space hunting down a traitor outside the station, drifting for a long time until I found a destroyed space station and ship which I looted, and then returned to the station safe and sound to recount my adventure to my collueges as we waited for the shuttle to arrive. And another time a traitor pulled a gun on me in security and pumped a couple of rounds into me. Luckily in the resulting chase he got flashed by a motion-activated flasher and got stunned long enough for me to disarm and hand-cuff him. When help arrived, I boasted that I was barely hurt and then used the lay-down command to 'collapse' from my wounds. And I'm sure that I've forgotten a lot of awesome moments too. Running laser battles in the hallways, sneaking into the armory for weapons, huddling in closests as threatening shadows lurk in the darkness... The game does have its moments, if you are willing to dump your time and energy into it.

I believe I mentioned that possibility. And even on the right servers you can die within the first five minutes if you're plain unlucky. Either by doing something stupidly fatal like running out of an airlock and not remembering Newton's Laws, or being in a situation where you're alone with someone whose objective is to kill you. Such is life on Space Station 13.

Emergent memorable stories are my favorite part of gaming, though... and I'm willing to be very patient in search of them.  Sounds like something I'll only get to try for on the weekends, though.

I just realized, Urist being mostly abandoned now means that I can keep practicing with the SM and not get yelled at if I mess up. Obviously, the engine is slightly different in other servers but the singularity is straightforward and all other stuffs are just SM with different wires anyways.
