Try out tgstation13 or they who should not be named. They're good servers. The former for stupid silly fun and the latter for hardcore RP.

Yeah, Colonial Marines doesn't have the best reputation.

This game's combat system is pretty bad, so things like CM are confusing and not very fun :v

If you're planning to play here (and Glloyd sorts his shit out), the latter has the advantage of running a code branch we use as basis; if you play on /tg/, you may suddenly find that depressurization goes from 'Somebody should do something about this soon.' to 'HOLY SHIIIIIIIIT!', for instance.

The whole atmos system works so well on Bay that it's literally a fucking overkill. It's not even HOLY SHIIIIIIIT!, you won't even manage to say anything before being sucked off into space, unconscious.

I lament the loss of disposals as a viable transportation method myself - back on Boxstation, clever rerouting of a single pipe allowed you to break into Captain's Office in a much safer way than hacking in ever could (although you had to have an exit strategy).

Captain's spare ID is your exit strategy.
Also, stungloves. I remember them. They were the shit. ;_;

lmao if stungloves still existed in modern tgs everybody would be salty at sec literally all the time because sec would literally have to stun and arrest anybody trying to stand next to them who is wearing gloves

Yeah, except when there IS a Captain, who either lockers or takes the spare (and the tele), or someone breaks in first the traditional way. Then, well, you've just brigged yourself for your own crime.

Just survived a round for the first time.  Got turned into a cultist shortly after joining the game.  Stood around in the cultist base watching people make runes, wondering how the hell they do that.  Tried to find directions in the wiki and failed.  When the hide-out was found out, I ran through the chaos and toxic atmosphere to the shuttle docking station and waited there.  Helped axe-murder non-cultists who poked their nose in.  Escaped in the shuttle.  Whew I kinda sorta did stuff a bit.

Lastnight I watched someone perform surgery and remove an appendix.  It was pretty neat.

Seeing all these people display these advanced in-game skills fills me with determination.

When someone cults you, they're technically supposed to give you a grimoire to go with the conversion so that you can do the necessary blood magic, and they're also supposed to fill you in on the magic words. Unfortunately, most of the time they don't, which means you generally need to ask around until you find someone who's actually willing to help you... or at least give you some non-magic things to do to help out.

As for the 'advanced skills', most of the basics of any field of work can be learned in a session or two, either via the Wiki or asking someone who knows what they're doing to teach you. People are generally willing to help out if you ask nicely.

I'm still struggling with basic item interaction :P

From what I can tell, though, that seems to be the most difficult part of the game to learn.

Also: enjoy the feeling. SS13 is best enjoyed when you're learning the ropes and you don't expect crazy shit happening. A lot of the recent Urist slump is ennui.
