I recently made a picture guide on how to work the Supermatter; or at least, how I usually set it up. Maybe it might help the stray spaceman that wants to start the engine?

I'd like to point out that you don't need to hack into the CE's room to open secure storage, you can just swipe your card on engineering's APC then turn off the equipment power, which allows you to crowbar open Secure Storage's shutters.  The canisters also auto-close if you eject a tank from them with the valve still open, but closing it manually is a good habit to have.
I usually use sixteen shots on the crystal.  I've tested, and it can take up to at least eighteen shots and stay stable, but 16 is a good number; letting all five of the SMES charge at 120kW.
The crystal also only goes radioactive after the first shot hits it, not when the N2 is put into it.  And lastly, I usually set all the pumps to max, not 500, there's not much difference, but the gas gets moved around faster when they're maxed.

I am reasonably sure that was the cause of at least half my problems with engineering.
