Back Problems
« on: February 18, 2013, 04:33:12 am »

Well. I seem to have a problem with my back, as recently my lower back has been painful as all hell. I think that it may have been my slouching in chairs, but now it hurts like hell. Should I go see a doctor or physiotherapist?

Aren't they back doctors?
Note that my advice is horrible, but if it's serious hurt you should probably go to a back doctor. Hence chiropractor.

Go to a chiropractor. They can and will do wonders if you stick with it and not stop after two to three sessions.

Relevant copypasta from another thread.

If it's a constant ache with intermittent spikes of pain, you may have what I have (but then, I have a few different things with my back.) A) Most common would be Spina Bifida Occulta, most reports have it effecting about 10% of an otherwise healthy population. This just means that one of your vertebra didn't close properly. B) Less common would be a Pars Defect/Spondylolsis, about 3% of people. It's also a verteba defect. C) If you have a tingling or numbness of the legs, you may have Spinal Stenosis, which is a narrowing of the lower spine. Guess who has all three?

Go see a doc, get some x-rays, and get a heating pad. It really helps. If your condition is really bad, you may wind up in physical therapy.

Bad posture can result into a nasty lower back pain, speaking from personal experience. The pain is usually not constant, instead there are spikes of stabbing pain. Try to keep a good posture AND get shot. By an xray, of course, and ASAP.

(Assuming there is nothing damaged/injured in your back that requires more serious medical care) When I was having back issues a few years ago, the only thing that helped was Tai Chi. It teaches good posture and how to shift your weight when you move.

I suggest acupuncture.

My mother had chronic lower back pain for over a decade, eventually reaching the point where she could hardly get out of bed. She had half a dozen operations, tried various medical remedies and nothing worked. Our neighbour suggested acupuncture, and she decided to try it. She walked out the door an hour later literally running around the parking lot, completely pain-free for the first time in thirty years.

Well, went to the doc. No physical excercise for two weeks, and lose some weight. Thanks for the advice guys.

One more thing is that a mattress that was too soft/not flat caused me some back pain (possibly too hard too, but I only ever had a problem with too soft).  I put off getting a new mattress, and I was  definitely getting occasional but more-and-more frequent shooting pains in my leg and lower back pain.  New mattress and all went away.

Also, there are things like the "kneel-in" chairs that will strengthen those muscles, but I found em pretty uncomfortable and DAMN you gotta start off in small doses because they really do work those seldom-used (for me anyway) muscles.  I should have stuck with it longer, but it wasn't my chair and I didn't like it enough to shell out cash for one :D
