I think part of the fun of DF is having your ass handed to you by clowns. HONK!

To be fair, many of them are so silly that they might as well be.

I'm newish here, but I quickly noticed many peeps always used the terms candy, HFS and clown.  I understood why when someone didn't and kinda cheated me out of the moment of Fun, so I support the idea of using the slang as a matter of courtesy.  I've never enjoyed a spoiler, no matter how small.
As I've read other posts were the member stated they don't care or even "...HATE the people who do it.", I've started wondering what the general opinion on this matter is.

It's mostly us oldies not liking it for one or two reasons, either because we don't like the terminology, or because we're tired of the same old overdone memes being spouted over and over again.

See, for the first reason. When I first started here, the Hidden Fun Stuff was still called that, or HFS, on a regular basis, and people actually mare an effort not to spoil it. It worked for me. I didn't know what it meant until I ran into it. But during my starting year of play, the clown metaphor started up. Even to someone who still didn't have much experience with anything HFS, the analogies were obvious. Clowns? Obviously special enemies. Clownite? Obviously special metal. And so on. It doesn't keep anything from being spoilered, it just changes the names. Do you really think anyone is surprised when the "clowns" show up because they were told "clowns will show up and kill your fort" rather than "demons will show up and kill your fort"? I don't.

That's why I personally dislike the terminology. It is a lazy attempt to disguise your spoilers as not being spoilers while not actually having to do anything or make any kind of effort to not reveal it to new players. That it's also a in-joke so you can tell the community "Look guys! I'm one of you!" is just a bonus, hut it brings us to the second reason; the stupid memes.

You see, you haven't been a member of these forums for very long (though I don't know if you've been lurking long before joining), but if you stay long enough you'll notice that these forums have a problem with memes. They stopped making new ones years ago. Instead, they just keep using the same old worn down stuff over, and over, and over again. When you first join, they're funny and fresh (and I have a theory that the whole reason for the meme stagnancy is because there's such a flow of people joining but not staying for long, hence many people never tire of the jokes), but when you've been here a while, they aren't particularly interesting any more. It's like the people who are still using "The cake is a lie!" or "One does not simply X into Mordor!". No, in fact it's worse, because those two have died out and are seldom used, while the old DF memes are still being told all the time, making them annoying rather than sigh-and-chuckle worthy.

Those are the main two reasons people dislike the clownology.

Thank you for that explanation.  So, presently, it's no different than members referring to goblins as "gobbos" (which irritates the snot out of me because it's blatantly a case of, as you stated, "Look guys! I'm one of you!").

It's been a true pleasure to finally read a thread that contained quotes, complete sentences, and wasn't pitted with typos, and a lack of capitals and punctuation.  Literacy is obviously not dead yet.  I'd love to stay and chat, but the knowledge is elsewhere, and I've still got to work on my posting tone.  It was honed on Usenet and seems to frighten people, making them think I'm a hot-head.  I guess the generation gap is catching up with me.

I don't really mind them too much but I've spent long periods away from b12 in the last 2-3 years so maybe it's worn off.

Not to the extent that I'll tolerate another magma joke though.

E:

might I also add that as a a phrase "Protocol of the Deep" is really damn rad-sounding

Irony being there is a bandwagon for people who hate bay12 colloquialisms. I for one stand by our treasured euphemisms. You see them as jokes, I see them as language. Splendid.

I think the term "gobbo" is more used to indicate casual conversation than flash around membership. Though I haven't been to the upper boards much recently.

There are DF memes?
Do tell.
Magma is the worst. Butchering kittens tends to be overused, as does general brutality (when unoriginal). I think stone mugs qualify, but they aren't really overused in jest.
There was a thread full of "advice dwarf" images, but I can't find it. It was a bit meta in terms of Internet memes.

Dammit LW I don't want to argue with you over the term meme again.

Those are all memes. They are ideas spread throughout the community by their own volition.

Magma is not an idea. Magma is one of the only two liquids in the game and is a vital component in most Dorfy traps.

Butchering kittens comes from the [ADOPTS_OWNER] problem not some idea that butchering kittens is any more fun than butchering pigs or yaks.

General brutality is not unique to any one culture of humanity, what with humanity being brilliantly capable and expressive of general brutality. DF didn't invent this idea.

Stone mugs used to have lots of appearances because they were very good trade goods. Plump helmets are not memes either because they are heavily employed.

Image macros are macros.

Immigrant culling stems from the current fact that some people find the interface far too obtuse to manage unwanted migrants/have no other option to send them back to the mountainhome.

Science is simply the catch all phrase to apply to any sort of science regarding game mechanics.

I agree with magma not being a meme, but the use of it to solve all problems is.

I agree with butchering kittens not being a meme, but the obsession with kittens as opposed to, say, alpacas is.

I agree with brutality not being a meme, but the extremeness of it in the DF community is.

I agree with stone mugs not being memes, but their still being used as examples is. Plump helmets aren't, no.

I agree wholeheartedly with your statement on macros.

The term "science" is definitely a meme when it's on fire. By itself, it's not, but ‼science‼ definitely is.
