Protocol of the deep and this forum
« on: February 17, 2013, 05:13:56 pm »

I'm newish here, but I quickly noticed many peeps always used the terms candy, HFS and clown.  I understood why when someone didn't and kinda cheated me out of the moment of Fun, so I support the idea of using the slang as a matter of courtesy.  I've never enjoyed a spoiler, no matter how small.
As I've read other posts were the member stated they don't care or even "...HATE the people who do it.", I've started wondering what the general opinion on this matter is.

You'd probably get more topical responses in the DF General Discussion board. That said, I suppose it's a fun little thing for people to do, but like anything else the upper boards can create a fierce divide over it. *cough*training rooms*cough*

What's to hate?
You and I both know that there will always be someone railing against everything, if only for the sake of being different.  :P

General opinion seems to be 'don't spoiler the newbies', but as always there are some dissenters.

My thought, too.  To "hate" someone for being courteous makes no sense.

The first issue with these words, that I have at least is. You are not making a spoiler. You're not hiding anything. Your just changing the words used, anyone who actually has not seen it is still getting the general idea. You know how you protect against spoilers?

The second issue is. Come on. It's dwarf fortress. Very very few people are not going to know about the thing anyway way before they reach it. It's not like this is a book or a movie when the end is a thing that can be spoiled because it's part of the story and stuff. Hell and demons are such are just another game mechanic in a obscure enough game that you are not likely to get to or understand them without at least knowing about them first.

Edit: Actually a third point, and the reason why I really don't like it. Is people act so... Smug about it some times. When you combine with the first point at least. When they are not actually preventing spoilers at all, but they seem to self satisfied that they are so cool for talking in this inside jokey way. A inside joke that means absolutely nothing and accomplishes absolutely nothing and helps absolutely nobody.

So more or less the same reasoning that people throw out when they attack individuals who post in open letter form: "I don't like the way you type (speak), therefore you should stop doing the thing I object to." It's not an issue of understanding (grammar, spelling, and so forth), but a very minor variation. There's no reason to go off on someone because they enjoy their little in-jokes.

Honestly, the whole thing is overblown. It's the worst kept secret in the world.

It wasn't even an issue. I just think anyone getting worked up over someone's typing style - so long as it's not disruptive - is a bit silly.

Spoilering things with stupid in jokes isn't disruptive. We all know what you mean. Stuff like Zalgo text and enormous red walls of MAGMAAAA, on the other hand? Yeah, that's disruptive.

It can disrupt the ongoing tone of a thread; though, I suppose that can happen unintentionally with ease, so it's hardly a good argument.

From what I've seen, that sort of thing typically occurs when someone fresh from the upper boards carries their old habits with them, and it's hardly noticeable enough to be called disruptive. Let's be frank: if a thread is so close to the tipping point between silliness and [insert tone here (probably SRS BSNS FOR REAL THIS TIME)] that a single post with DF memes can push it over the brink, it's hardly fair to blame the (quite possibly unwitting) final straw for it.

I wasn't even surprised when I found out. It's pretty cliche. I don't know how, but I kinda guessed it, it just made sense that there was stuff there, etc.
In fact, I didn't even understood the whole "HFS" at the time, there was warnings on the wiki "You'll know when you find it", and when I actually read it, I thought "Oh, that thing was HFS, ... ok". Though I understand, and I think the change words are fine, not a strict spoiler, but still not spilling the beans in the face of a newbie.

I don't mean in terms of ruining the thread, just providing annoyance through disruption. But upon reflection, I think this is more an issue of the individual than of the material used. That's where the hate really comes from; not toward the terminology but the people who are most using the terminology. The two become irreversibly separated and the terminology becomes hated. I think. As for those people, they could be the ones who are smug about knowing something that others don't.
