« on: February 14, 2013, 11:27:57 pm »

http://www.gog.com/gamecard/system_shock_2

I didn't see this in a search or on the current pages. Hopefully someone didn't beat me to it.
Thought you all might want to know it's finally arrived on GOG.com!

Wishlisted (still have my disk, can't justify a full price purchase)

Note that it comes with some bonus content. Nothing jaw-dropping, but still very nice little perks for diehard fans of the game. I'm tempted, even though I have my original disc as well.

Once again, I can't justify paying GOG for an older game. I love their no-DRM policy on newer games, but hell if I'm going to pay for what just a few years ago was essentially abandonware. (And yes, I still have my original disc as well, so I wouldn't be doing anything illegal anyway, in this case.)

To me GOG's treatment of older games seems analogous to a company seeing homeless people digging through trash and saying. Hmm... there's a market here. And going up to all the dumpsters and welding payment boxes to the sides for rights to dig through them. Maybe throwing a step ladder down there because "you're paying for a service to make it easier to play!"

Back on topic. SS2 was a great game until the end. Never finished it because it got weird and frustrating. But it really had great atmosphere up until then.

Actually, it isn't a bad stretch for GOG to want payment like that.  Between buying the rights to sell the game, they also employee coders and programmers who fix up the programs they sell so that they work on newer computers.  When I installed SS2 not too long ago, it was a hassle with mods and stuff just to get it working on my Win7 PC.  GOG usually does a good job of fixing that.

Maybe for those odd games that fall into that odd middle area between dos and modern windows, but when they just slap a copy of dosbox onto something, it's insulting.

In any case, i've never had trouble running SS2 on any version of windows... maybe I'm just lucky.

Given the hassle of trying to get dosbox to work with any old game I enjoyed in the past, I find myself willing to pitch in a few extra bucks for those games that already got GOG support done for them.  But it is more than that.  Unofficial patches and fixes, up-front forum support, its worth it.

Lets not forget that this is the only non stupidly overpriced way to get SS2 in a long time. Just increasing it's accessibility alone is worth it being on GoG.

Would you seriously rather pay $60 plus on amazon? Or try your luck on ebay?

And no system shock 2 was never abandonware. People do actively own the intellectual property to it. In any case I likely would never play the game again if it wasn't on gog since lets be honest, it's a headache to get working on anything not 1999-2003 era. I muchly appreciate that work being done for me.

Sorry I dragged it in this direction, should have known better.

But no, like I said I've never had significant trouble running it on any version of windows. Again, maybe I'm just lucky but I still install it and play it to this day from my original disc on Windows 7 64x. I might have had to download a patch at one point, but that was the most difficult thing I ever had to do.

I had weird sound glitches and no cutscenes when I tried to run SS2 on my Win7 machine. I'll be glad to finally play this, I've been looking for a decent sci-fi first-person hybrid RPG... thingy ever since Deus Ex.
