Capturing the equipment and avoiding harm to the people manning it is preferable, but as a fallback destruction seems the most sensible option.

I'd imagine that if the vehicle in question was a tank rather than a plane there'd be no question about seizing or destroying it for being in another nation's borders.

I meant it's faction is unidentified. Many military vehicles and all aircraft are required to identify themselves when asked and are supposed to coordinate their activities with the local authority in the area they're operating in during peacetime. In the case of aircraft it's to avoid collisions, in the case of others it's generally to keep civilians and their property safe.

If you see a plane/tank/ship/group of soldiers moving around and they refuse to respond to hails it's hard to tell who they work for, could be another country, could be rebels, could be a bunch of drunk soldiers from a nearby military base with lax security, could be a very convincing halloween costume, but it's best to prepare for the worst and hope it's nothing.

But the alternative is letting potentially hostile bombers fly over your airspace, which can't exactly be permitted either.

The co-pilot could've easily directed the plane towards one of the major France cities and wreck some major shit. Then it would've been a terrorist attack.

But this one is a murder-suicide.
