I think it is a covert operation. One day all that Polish "workers" will take arms and annex EU forming a glorious Polish Empire

Insufficient GLORIOUS HUSSAR WINGS OF PATRIOTISM, M12ey. Polan cannot into empire without them.

Here we have the same problem. It's quite shameful, really. I'm in the second half of my residency and I'm 100% sure that as soon as I'm finished I'm either going abroad or joining  some pharmaceutical great house, which amounts to the same in the end.

Eh, that's actually direct etymology. 'Vladimir' means something along the lines of 'world-ruler' or 'peace-ruler'. In the same vein, Vladislav is 'fame/renown-ruler'

Actually, Vladimir originally meant 'great-ruler'. Got transformed into 'world-ruler' by proto-Russian language, though.

Still, it's a pretty great last name, don't you think?

Definitely not 'great'. 'Mir' is an old world for 'peace' in proto-Slavic language (mirъ), remains a veeeery antiquated word for the same in Polish, and apparently still means the same thing in modern Croatian and Slovene.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vladimir_%28name%29

"There was no ambiguity prior to reforms of Russian orthography in 1918. The spelling of the two words was миръ (peace) and мiръ (the Universe),[3] and the name was spelled the third way, Владимѣръ,[2] of Gothic -mērs (great), meaning "Great in His Power"[2] (compare: Theodemir, Valamir). but Russian speakers understood and understand the meaning as "Peace Owner" or "World Ruler"."

Ah, but as the same page and your quote says:

Quote
but Russian speakers understood and understand the meaning as "Peace Owner" or "World Ruler".

And the same applies to all other Slavic usages. Since given names are given by the parents, and at least originally with intent, this becomes an interesting discussion of whether the Gothic origin is relevant, if that was not the intended meaning.
