Scotland confirmed for East Germany.

You would be amazed how much of post-Thatcher UK looks like that as you move away from the South East, especially in the North East of England, Scotland and the South Wales valleys.

Post-Thatcher?

The architect did get a knighthood under Thatcher though... So let's blame her anyway.

I don't know how to feel in that most of the brutalist architecture in my borough is getting demolished and replaced with contemporary and postmo shit. The contemporary things are ok, kinda block out all sunlight and all and the postmo looks... Ok. An inverted pyramid is the worst thing they've done in that regards. Got off lucky.

Wait, did Northern Ireland just win on the architecture front? Something is wrong.

Very wrong.

Edit:

Here's a nice picture, too.

I thought it was spelled "norn iron".

Also, that does indeed look cool. I image it spawns conscripts every few seconds.

OK, let's get this straight, because I'm periodically thinking we might have a confusion of terms here. POST-modernist architecture looks... well, it looks like modernist architecture designed by 'ironic' hipsters. If the Parliament thing's windows WERE supposed to look like the architect wanted to advertise a pistol, it probably is PoMo.

From my admittably not extremely in-depth experiences with London, most of the crap getting built is straight-up new modernism.

Also, I think that the Renfrewshire Council thing looks pretty decent, actually, and the first pic of Cumbernauld looks like Polish architecture IN THE FUCKING NINETIES. Which, I admit, is not a compliment to either, but the 70s/80s picture looks pretty decent in comparison to some of the nightmarish architect-spawn here that is far more recent.

The main thing with Brutalism is that concrete. Ages. Just. Fucking. Horrible. And nobody realized that until it was waaaaaay too late, leaving these things that look like the physical embodiment of bleakness and depression's turds. And there is just SOMETHING about the window-making of Sixties through Eighties that exacerbates that.

I actually cannot wrap my head around how Brutalism could grow out of Modernism, since their approach to space and form is pretty much flipped.

Yeah, was trying to find a good illustrative guide to different schools of architecture as we seem to have at least four different ones being complained about here, but then blaming everything on post-modernism and Thatcher seems to be the order of the day and evidence requires work.

Damn Owl, those pictures look like something from Eastern Europe, because that is pretty much soviet architecture over there.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We have a lot of those things in some parts of the cities/towns from our past soviet overlords.

Well, blaming everything on Thatcher and/or post-modernism is how you can do post-modernism, so I guess it's just self-demonstrating.

Post-post-modernism. Like post-ironic is still ironic, just not in the way that's not cool any more.

Well, Scottish Labour were almost Socialist back then so it does make sense that they would draw inspiration from somewhere.

It's post all the way down.

Which is incidentally a motto I'm not going to sell to a newly-forming post company, because that's not a thing and the joke would be way too lame.
