A guy affiliated with the German Pirates made a video on the EU - it's in German, but even the non-German speakers should get the joke.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5h5RJpiKsw

I'm a non-German speaker and I don't get the joke. Unless it's some kind of pirates vs ninjas thing as the other group sort of look like they're supposed to be ninjas

Random European news (and yes I know it's grabbed off of CNN, using iPhone)

http://www.cnn.com/2014/05/13/business/milan-vertical-forest/index.html?c=europe

Remember what I said about all sides cooperating in Ukraine in order for things to go forward? The Kiev government isn't cooperating too well by not inviting the other side, which is kind of neccesary in peace talks.

But let's talk about the coal mine fire tragedy in Turkey instead.

Opposition blames government,  it is cheaper to compensate for a dead worker than pay for their lifeguards. Majority of deaths due to CO poisoning.

Sadly, human life does indeed have a price, and it's not that expensive.

So long as the PR gets spun well enough, anyway. It can be pretty damned expensive if it gets the public to turn on you.

But yeah, companies have formulas for determining the cost of safety measures vs lawsuits/injuries/deaths, and all too many just go with whichever is going to cost less. Even if it's the latter instead of the former.

Which, up to a point, is perfectly okay. If the company bankrupt itself by forcing every staff to wear a climbing harness every time they climb a ladder, it does no good.

EU court backs 'right to be forgotten'

More specifically, Google and other search engines are no obligated to delete links relating to those people upon those people's request.

Edit: I don't think I actually support this. I mean, the info is still out there, it just makes it harder to find.

This very thread, 3 pages ago.

Anyway, Belgium got hacked, again.

Within a week? Geeze. Who was it this time? Maybe it'll turn out to be some random kid in Belgium.

Nah, it's a different hacking incident.

Last time it was the Ministry of Foreign affairs getting hacked, this time it was the Ministry of Economic thingies. Though the incident dates from early this year, we were only informed about it now.

Anyway, it turns out that it wasn't even us who found out about our systems being infected. We got a polite hint from the US about it.
