I'm going to disagree with you on Georgia, but I'll also point out that the situation in Georgia took years before the 2008 war. Russia can't just start invading like that.

Also, Russia obviously chose not to care what the Ukrainian people think. Threatening a trade embargo if they don't do as they're told is no way to make friends.

Still, Ranger, what do you think of a split? How are the Easterner doing? Do you think Yanukovich will be bussing in miners from the Donbass again?

Yankovich survives the parliament vote

A hollow victory, as a significant part of pro-government deputies abstained, but a victory nonetheless.

Yep. even Russia needs some kind of excuse. Of cause provocations in Crimea are always possible and something I rather afraid of but still that's not so likely. For now I have no idea how everything will develop.... If anyone would tell me two weeks ago that I'll see hundredth on thousands on the streets before the 2015 elections I'd say he is a dreamer

No chance to do that in large scale. He lost any kind of serious support here. Especially among youth. Most Easterners are in deep political apathy. They distrust Yanukovitch because he never fulfilled any of his promises, They distrust Russia after that trade war and all absurd and hostile anti-Ukrainian propaganda they can witness and experience it's results when visiting Russia.  Still they never started to trust opposition because both Ukrainian nationalism and Western Liberalism are rather alien ideologies for  them. Klitchko had some chances but a)he is  too Western  and b) He formed an alliance with nationalists....

Basis of Yanukovitch power are money of oligarchs,  pocket justice, almost half a million of police forces, at least 100 000 personnel of private security firms* and various hired criminal elements that are rather hard to count

I guess the Eastern part of Ukraine is pretty religious, right? Are there any Orthodox Christian Nationalist (as in "We don't want Russia up in our business") parties? Think Weimar-era Zentrum, but with a more firm nationalist stance...

What's so really about that? Is Ukraine Catholic? Or are you bothered by the idea of religious nationalists in general?

Religious states have this odd tendency to end badly, but also doing anything involving the Russian Orthodox Church is paving the way towards Putintopia.

No, Westerners are generally more religious

No, there are no serious Christian parties and in Svoboda, the only non-marginal nationalist party discussions on religious matter are strictly banned, especially public discussions. That's viewed as nothing but a way to divide the nation. Any party member that will publicly say something like:  "Religion A is better than religion B*" risks to get one way ticket out of the party. Even pro-Russian Orthodox church of Moscow patriarchate is not attacked directly, only it's corrupted, Putin's puppet clergy

*Unless it's some totalitarian sects.

General breakdown of religious can be find in good old wiki -  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_Ukraine . If you want any further clarification feel free to ask

As for the  current involvement, both Greek Catholics and Orthodox of Kiev Patriarchate are rather heavily involved in protests. Mostly because they very well understand that with moving closer to Russia only Russian church will remain

Do you mean Westerners as in Western Europe/Americans, or Western Ukrainians?

Reading again, I think you mean Western Ukrainians.

I think I should also point out than the Kiev Patriarchate is leading an independent Ukrainian church that Moscow doesn't recognize, and that was violently repressed during Soviet times (even more than the rest).

You are little wrong here, Kiev Patriarchate was formed after dissolution of Soviet Union when one big Soviet-era church divided.

It's Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church that was repressed hard.

Internal conscripts? Can you try to get them to switch over to the protesters? I mean, they're a nice PR touch for the government: look at them all scared and huddled together.

Not that I particularily relish the role of Devil's advocate, but the US goverment did exactly that just before the elections that ousted Slobodan Millosevic.

The US doesn't really care either.

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.
