Apocalypse - The Story Continues!
« on: February 11, 2013, 01:10:03 am »

Thread is undergoing an overhaul. These quotes will be turned into rules momentarily, and in the meantime the game will continue.

How do you guys feel about multiple universes? I'm thinking the game is going to start becoming less about the fall of America via super fungus and more about the idea of an impending or occuring apocalypse.

As in multiple simultaneous games or a shift in gameplay possibilities?

If the former:
Do you mean separating each player into a separate universe, and if so, what would be the major difference(s)?
Or do you mean running another set of three people in another universe but under the same thread?

If the latter:
I'm fine with the gradual change- an ongoing, prolonged apocalypse is always fun. Reminds me of The Mist.
If you don't want the focus to change though, you could guide different characters towards however many plot lines you want to explore.
Or you can just keep plopping us down in the universe & throwing wrenches at us, watching our frantic attempts to dodge them.

Really, all three of these sound perfectly fine to me- but my real answer is: Could you clarify?
I understand. What I mean is: each new player will either be exposed to an entirely new universe (as in another time, another place, another world), or return to an existing one. For example: right now we've got three "timelines" going on: Chicago Fungus Epidemic (1920) - the apocalypse is well under way, though limited to big cities and the US itself, as the fungus has difficulty thriving in open country and it hasn't had the opportunity to go global just yet (though you haven't learnt that and probably never would have), Powder (1930?) - not revealing too much about this one yet, but you've already met the antagonists, The Tower - this one isn't even set on Earth, and I wanted to make it a surprise, but I suppose there's times to hold your cards and a time to show your hand.

I think a new thread for that would be fine. It could get a little out of hand tracking who's where in each universe.
No new thread. There'll only be three players, as it is now, and as such only three universes will be tracked at any given time. I'll have a list of the universes in the OP, and the post just below that one will contain flavour spoilers for each one, such as PSAs, grafitti, worker handbooks, and personal letters. When an apocalypse is resolved, the universe will be 'completed', and will be moved out of the queue. The universe a new player will end up in is up to me, and its your job, as the player, to figure out whats going on and attempt to resolve the situation. Actions by the players are cumulative and the universe will continue to move linearly, but ONLY WHEN A PLAYER IS PLAYING IT. An apocalypse will be considered resolved when either a sanctuary is created (a new home world, a safe town for everybody, a space station where everyone can live), the antagonists are defeated, destroyed, or otherwise subdued (though it need not be permanent, they can be 'locked away for a thousand years' or somesuch), or the protagonist race is wiped out, enslaved, assimilated, etc. Multiple players can play in the same universe. Some universes may never be 'completed', and you don't necessarily need to strive to complete it.

I'll pre-in if it's available, in the hopes that this doesn't go IronyOwl again.

*Kchaaaaw chik... Kchaaaaw chik...* "When was the last time I had changed my canister?" He thought "These weren't the good ol' hold out cans ya find in army bases or that. These were the waterlogged remains of stashes long dried up. Best change soon. I can feel it starting to clot up." He moves stealthily in the snow, his heavy coat blocking the flakes but a heavy gust revealing just how vulnerable he really is, cutting through the stitches in the thick fabric made with fishing line and suture needles. The US has been wiped out by an extremely violent fungal infection. All major cities are massive colonies, and the air is thick with spores at all times of day. Keep your mask on at all times. If you're infected, then there's not much that can be done. Inhaling spores is a death sentence, and having them embed themselves in your skin can result in cripplingly painful wounds that rot the flesh from your bones. Go.

Pufferfish
You wake up with a pounding headache. You force your eyes open and survey your surroundings. You find yourself in a low, decrepit cellar. A small card table with two folding chairs take up one of the corners, and an ancient ebony wardrobe with rusty brass hinges and a surprisingly clean if a bit scratchy cot line the opposite wall. You start as you spot the hunched figure seated in the darkened corner watching you with a wary eye.

Gotdamnmiracle
You watch the other person with cautious interest, pulling your collar a bit higher in an effort to conceal your features. No sense in revealing yourself just yet, you think. This could become interesting, you slowly begin to realize.

Name: American, Polish, or Italian names will go.
Gender: Male or Female
Bonus Item (Pick One): Antibiotics (kills infection ONCE and prevents it for 12 hours upon application), Street-map (know your way around town), Backpack (empty, but lets you carry more), B-3 Gas Mask (doesn't need filters), S&W Revolver (comes in good shape and with one round in the chamber)

(You guys should probably get out of the city. It's much less threatening when people are trying to kill you instead of fungus.)
