Chicago: 1923
A low figure trudges between the looming ruins, grey sunlight shafting through the charred remains of burnt out buildings. His footsteps are muffled, almost as if the entire city has been blanketed in a fresh covering of snow. He shakes his head at the thought, then stops, something small and unmistakably white catching his attention. He stoops momentarily, groping at the sheet through the pile of twisted metal cocooning it. He dusts it off and holds it close to his face, peering at it through the heavy gas mask he always wears. A newspaper. "District of Columbia Succumbs to Airborne Menace!" He lets out a low sigh and slips it into the satchel he keeps strapped to his belly, just beneath the safety of his thick overcoat. A metallic clatter reverberates off the charred brick of the structures. He comes up instantly, his head snapping round as he scans the littered, pockmarked streets with a trained eye. Then, deciding that he shouldn't linger here any longer, he drifts away from what remained of the past, fading into the dull mist pervading the streets.
