(OP's Note: When I loaded the ROM, it dropped me to when I saved shortly after catching Tara instead of in the cutscene from the end of the last update. Thus, I had to play a little behind-the-scenes catchup, during which I met some new Pokemon. Like Deoxys. A level 6 Deoxys in Petalburg Woods. That was fun :P
We're all caught up now though, so let us resume the story. Oh, and please note the section in bold; that's a legit question I'm asking.)

Part 10: Yarrrr

At the time, I had no idea why this guy was just talking to himself in the middle of the woods. My initial reaction was that he was just crazy, which caused a bit of concern when he noticed me and strolled over. Turns out that he was looking for a Pokemon called a "Shroomish", which made me think he was on drugs as well as being crazy.

forever, didn't you?"

Suddenly, a pirate showed up! He began yelling at the crazy guy (who the pirate called a "Devon Researcher". Apparently he's a crazy scientist) and demanding papers.

Wha?! Don't hide behind me, I'm just a kid! Every scientist I've met so far is a coward :(

The pirate decided that enough was enough and attacked me with his Pokemon, declaring himself to be a member of Team Aqua! I had no choice but to pull out my own to defend myself.

He just had one of those mean Poochyena dogs, so it wasn't too much trouble. It was a plain dirty fighter however, throwing sand into my Pokemon's eyes repeatedly.

With his single Pokemon defeated, all the Aqua Grunt could do was throw a few cheap taunts my way before running off. The Devon Researcher gave me a Great Ball as a reward for protecting him and his important papers, so I guess it was worth it. Then he ran off, screaming about some crisis.

Anyway, I made my way through the rest of Petalburg Woods. I battled a couple of trainers (who all had bugs, for some reason) and met new interesting Pokemon.

Like this guy. He's cool-looking, but I already have Tara, so I don't need another fire-type for now.

See? Fire turtle > fire lizard.

These saplings block part of the path. Thankfully, the exit to the woods is north and I'm not trapped in here, but my gamer sense detects treasure on the other side of these trees!

Out of the woods! Hopefully Rustboro isn't too far away.

While I was plucking berries from some nearby trees, a kid about my age came up and offered to teach my Pokemon how to spit watermelon seeds. I declined, but he gave me a CD anyway and told me that it could teach one of my Pokemon a special attack. I took the CD, but I'm more than a little dubious.

Suddenly I realized that although I had gone through Petalburg Woods, I was still on Route 104. Could I catch more Pokemon here, or did Wattson still fulfill my quota? I resolved to ask about the matter at the next Pokemon Center, and avoid further patches of tall grass until I could learn more.

Once again, I sense loot on the other side of one of these saplings...

A pair of creepy twins block the way ahead. Am I gonna have to fight them both?

Apparently I am!

Say what now. I must have had beginner's luck or something, because despite never having done this before my Pokemon took almost no damage. Wattson even became capable of causing damage, learning Quick Attack!

I made it! Time to check out the sights!

Generally you have to decide what counts as a capture region and a boundary before you start your Nuzlocke run. Since you obviously haven't done that yet, you can write up a few simple rule variations that your previous actions conform to, and throw dice to pick between them. I'd suggest these: Either everything with the same route name counts as one capture region, or a capture region consists of all spots that you can travel to without seeing a new route name pop up.

Well, the second one would seem to give me more opportunities for catching, especially once I start getting to the multi-level caves. And the randomizer supposedly changes the wild slots for each new "map".

In this case, I'm out of luck. A quick check on Bulbapedia shows that both halves of Route 104 share the same wild slots and map, so no new Pokemon here. In the future however, I'll use the "all spots are capture regions" rule, bar outcry from the viewers.

I generally consider spots with different catchable Pokemon to be different areas, with the exception of caves, which, even if it has different Pokemon on different floors/entrances, I consider to be one region. But those are just my personal rules, and this is all coming from someone who has yet to successfully complete a Nuzlocke run. On the bright side, my run so far with the randomizer has been going swimmingly, with the exception that any time I get more than three Pokemon, one of them dies.

Go with the latter option. That lets us see you use more random pokemon.

Also a level 6 Deoxys is not especially deadly. It only knows Wrap, Leer, and Night Shade.

Sirus, if you've ever got VBA link, I can trade with you so you can evolve your pokes. I can also battle you with a wide variety of pokemon of levels anywhere between 5 to 78. :)

(Today is an gameplay-less update. Sorry! But to make up for it, have an overdose of Paint!)

*********************************

Part 11: Pre-Gym Prep

Wow! Rustboro City is a massive place compared to Littleroot or Petalburg. So many people and buildings! But we're not here to sight-see...
We've got a badge to earn.

Hey, this must be the place! Dad said that the leader of this gym was named "Roxanne". I wonder what kind of Pokemon she uses?

Well, let's take a look-see. I've got a pretty diverse team, I should be able to take on any-

!!!

********************

(Later...)

********************

Alright guys...

Group meeting.

I checked out the gym in this city, to get an idea of what we'd be facing. Turns out it's not good. We're dealing with-
Rock types. You six are all great Pokemon, but we're going in at a pretty severe disadvantage in terms of typing. What's worse, only Wattson has a level in the double-digits and I'm pretty sure that the Gym Leader at the very least is stronger than that.

And if that wasn't enough, none of you can use that "Bullet Seed" TM we picked up from that guy outside of town. So that leaves us with only one real plan of attack.

Genji, you're gonna be our front-line heavy hitter. You're the only one with an attack effective against rock-types, and you've got the toughness to hopefully take some hits.

Champ, you might only know Tackle, but you've got a defensive advantage against rock-type attacks. You might have to take a couple of hits if Genji needs healing.
Nina, you don't really have any advantages or disadvantages, but if we're lucky the enemy Pokemon will poison themselves on your spines. You've also got the ability to lower the enemy's attack or defensive power, which could prove useful.
Wattson, you're pretty much in the same boat. The worst part is that if the Geodudes in Petalburg Woods are anything to go by, your Thunder Wave won't even affect the Pokemon in that gym. So you'll probably sit this one out.

Tara, Lady...I'm sorry, but I can't risk you two unless things get really desperate. Both of you are weak to rock attacks and neither of you have any effective moves.

This is only our first gym. We've had some close calls already, and I don't want to lose anyone if I can avoid it. Let's get some training in, and then we'll show Roxanne a thing or two!

Damn... Tyrogue doesn't learn any fighting moves. In fact, he doesn't learn anything other than Tackle in Gen III. And here I thought the Rock gym would be easy...  :o

Also, Kingler isn't going to be too useful. Bubble has a pathetic 20 power, and Kingler has a dreadful Special Attack.

Well, obviously the strategy can change along the way :P
And I'm not counting on Genji sweeping the Rock Gym, but he'd have a 4x attack advantage against any Rock/Ground types like Geodude.

Aiming quad damage at a Geodude's pathetic special defense is going to do massive damage no matter what, and Kingler is tanky as fuck for this point in the game. The only thing that would be a threat to it is if Nosepass had an electric attack.

I'm loving this so far.

Kingler's pretty terrible in gen III anywho, considering that water is considered a special type and Kingler is purely physical; even Crabhammer, his signature move, hits terribly off the 50 spatk. Of course he only learns it at level 57!

The only other move worth mentioning in his gen III moveset is Mud Shot, a ground type move (in this era, physical so it's gonna be his leading anti-Fire/Rock move.)
Kingler learns Mud Shot at level 23.

Nina is probably the best choice; the geodudes don't carry any ground moves to hit Nina, and they've got a small chance of being poisoned from a rock throw OR tackle. A Nidorina will sweep right through.

Also, Imiknorris, I believe that it carries Thunder Wave but it doesn't have any offensive attacks that are electric. Watch out for Rock Tomb though.

Yeah, kinda wish the Randomizer had the option to introduce the Physical/Special split in earlier games. They're able to introduce the B/W exp gain system into some of the earlier games, and I know that at least in Gen III, the game was capable of making the distinction of whether a move made physical contact (ie: Carvahna/Sharpedo's Rough Skin ability), but then again, it's probably a lot more complicated than I'm aware of.

The only thing I'm really worried about is the Nosepass. I remember that thing being pretty nasty to my old Ruby team, and I doubt it got any easier in Emerald. Geodude is weaksauce in comparison.

I recall reading some speculation about an attack/sp. attack doubling item introduced next generation in the vein of Eviolite. I did some checking, and Krabby would in fact have the highest attack in the game, edging out Deoxys Attack Form. That would be a mighty Crabhammer indeed. In fact, it would be the most powerful physical water move in the entire game. In rain alongside Sheer Force, it would deal more damage than the mighty (no specs) Kyogre's Water Spout. 20.74% more, actually. I could be wrong, but that might actually be the most powerful physical move in the game bar none. Fun stuff.

Sadly for Genji, he is not a Krabby with access to imaginary items. Good luck to him! I love his face in all of your drawings.

Get Nina up to 16, and you should have at least a moderate to good chance.

Even though he resists rock, Champ will have a tough time being a meatshield to heal the others. Nina with double kick @ level 16 @ 60 + 60 = 120 base power is running off 67 base attack vs. Genji with Bubble @ 20 + 10 + 20 + 10 = 60 with 50 base spatk.

That being said, Nidorina is not a defensive powerhouse, and Genji should be able to tank some hits easily. Rock tomb is going to be horrifying, because of its base 55 + Stab = 82.5 base power plus a loss in speed. Nosepass is also quite defensively strong.
