Considering the strange circumstances, you decide it's worth checking the Closet again.

Just in case.




The closet is full of the usual assortment of hats, boots, cloaks, and jackets, from the resident students.
Nothing of yours, though. You prefer to keep your belongings in your own room. Safer that way.
So no, apart from the space where a comatose girl used to be, there's nothing out of the ordinary inside.

One thing you always thought was weird about the closet, though? All the ornate carvings.
Of course, the weird part is that they're on the inside.
Rather than, you know, on the outside. Where most people could see them.
Maybe the artist responsible was too lazy to decorate the outside too?
That, or Professor Grenfeldon is still just a shut-in nerd, with weird taste in furniture.

Also, check out the books upstairs.

You thought you caught the sight of some books left out, and head up the stairs to investigate.
Perhaps the leftovers from a late night cram session. Or an open rebellion, to set books free from the Library's tyranny.
Whatever the reason, you wish this mess was more of a surprise. Oi, these kids...



Looks like a textbook on Leylines and The Astral. Another one on magical Invocation and Sigil-writing.
And a poorly printed one, on the subject of something called "Spell-Hacking", apparently.
Seems legit. Definitely doesn't make you want to roll your eyes.

You're guessing these were all written before the state crack-down on Arcana.
The books sound like they just deal with theory, so they're... probably legal?
Depends if the Inquisition is looking for an excuse to lock you up, most likely.

These probably shouldn't be left out. You decide to take them for now.


   
Last but not least, the ragged brown one. Looks like a research notebook written by...
...wait, by Professor Grenfeldon? What?!

By the date, it was written long before he started teaching you, and the other students.
Maybe during his time on the Council, as Adeptus Major?
You'll have to talk to him about it, after tonight's lecture.
Anyway, it definitely shouldn't be left out.
Shouldn't have been in the library, even. Assuming that's where it came from...

You take the Old Notebook for safekeeping.



To be honest, you're more than a little curious to read it, but you probably shouldn't. At least not right now.
Besides, Yrma would probably take it personally, if you abandoned her just so you could stick your nose in a book.




After stowing the books, you look up to see a familiar figure in the window.

Also, OP is mostly updated with the new rules system. Check it out, if you're so inclined!

Some things to note:
  • Tryhard Bonus: You can spend 1 Willpower to make an Exceptional Effort on a Skill Test, getting +2 Bonus Dice. When suggesting an important action, make sure to specify that you want to use it!
  • Skill Tests and Dice: We roll 1d10 for every Skill Rank (star) in the 2 most related Skills, plus bonuses and penalties for the situation and available tools. 8 and up (teal) is a Success. 10 (purple) grants a bonus roll. 7 and below is a Failure (orange). If half or more dice are 1 (red), test is a Critical Failure. If 5 or more are Successes, test is a Critical Success. Difficulty (Stars) are the number of Successes needed to pass the test.
  • Traits and Special Abilities: Traits grant special abilities. Some are Passive, and some are Willpower-Activated. Details in each Trait's alt-text, and in the OP. Using Invocations (Magic) drains Willpower, and sometimes deals damage too.
  • Health/Willpower Recovery: You can take an hours break to recover from 1 Bashing Damage. A night's rest recovers all Bashing Damage, and some Willpower. After a night's rest, heal 1 Lethal Damage. 1 Critical Damage heals in a week. Medical care and magic can speed this up significantly.

Also, if eavesdropping doesn't answer this for us, ask Torrence what Celise wanted to do in the lab, who the balls is down there now if Celise is unconscious in a closet, and whether there's another key. We have a potential motive for whatever happened to Celise; she had a key to the lab.

Hey folks!

Next update will be up very soon.
Before that though, I wanted to let everyone know what’s up. A bit of Real-Talk.

First, I’m really glad to have y’all on board. Running something like this takes a good amount of work, but it’s so nice to see people having fun with it.

Forum Games is still a pretty active community, even if a lot of the old players (naturally) aren’t around anymore. I’m worried that the volume of old and necro’d material in this thread is scaring away potentially interested new players, too. If so, that would leave us with a pretty small crew. I really enjoyed how lively this thread got back in the day, and I’m hoping we can cultivate that same kind of environment again. Having discussion and suggestions and all that are what make the whole Suggestion Game thing work. I'll keep doing what I can to create something fun and open, and worth discussing. In addition to that, once this arc wraps up, I’m wondering if it’d be a good idea to start a new thread for the next adventure in the setting too. Not a total break, but a cleaner break. Depending how this situation goes, I think we’d be at a good breaking point, too.

Not to pull back the curtain, but even from the beginning, one of my goals was to give the players more authorial control over creating the core characters, and steering the focus of the game; back then, I wasn't sure how to do it with an existing setting in mind... at least in a way that didn't involve throwing a few pages of exposition at folks. So the first arc was going to be a sort of Establishing Shot for things, before it opened up a bit. Instead, I kinda painted us into a few corners I didn't intend to. Not bad corners, necessarily, but I want to give some of that authorial control back, you know? I've got a better idea how to run these things now, and better ideas for how to accomplish some of those old goals. I still intend to wrap up the current story, and I'm actually pretty excited about the upcoming bit (it should be a good'un)! I still think a cleaner break would help make this more fun for everyone.

That said, what do y'all think? Am I just being silly about scaring away the newbies? Do you think it'd help? Is getting a bit of a fresher start something you'd like or dislike? Any lurkers care to chime in?

You're silly in that the idea of 'people may be scared off' comes to you :P Actually, you're concerned and I love it.

Also love how there were stuff you wanted to bring up and not-that-much-IC-suggestions were a pathway to nudging em in :3 That's subtle movement to give more suggestions in exploring the lore of your game.

...Also I like how you made Mouser look like.

People are not, by nature, averse to information (even if it's a blatant wall of text in front of them), but the content in it. Sometimes, people skim over it because they're busy but still want to interact or play, so they go to summaries or catch details by searching through. But that's occasional habits alone. If you'd wish to make a new thread--link THIS ONE and THAT ONE together, BUT the mere matter that this thread has popped up brings attention for everyone regardless of 'oldbie or newbie'.

Just provide a link list in the OP, because from all the online reading I've done of game-stories or ISGs made by people, it's a list of links in a huge thread that helps the most. :P

Walls of text and necro'd threads don't scare newbies off. Newbies tend to get scared off by poor ideas, inconsistent updates, and unannounced absences.

Generally, people will start to trickle into a thread once they're done thread bingeing. If no new people whatsoever show up within 2-3 weeks, then you can start panicking  :P.
