Here's another choice quote:
Quote
However, you do remember your teacher saying that some Exemplar or other revised fables like these, to warn people of the dangers of spellcraft.

I'm also pretty sure I read somewhere that the exemplarate doesn't like magic or people using it because it draws on the power of the shadow-god guys, which hold power over this shadow world and try to trick us into believing it's real by offering us some of their power. So no one's allowed to use magic. Also: runons because lazy.

I kinda doubt that they're against all magic, especially since that might well include alchemal practices which we know are legal, but we'll just have to wait for Soli's answer.

FYI, if casting spells is illegal, I'm against healing her with magic...although I'll then have some more questions to ask.

I follow the path of Chaotic Good: Heal her if she's alive, whether or not it's legal.

If she's dead, raise her to start a necro army report the crime.

OH MY GOD
I suspect a trap- the most obvious reason to hide a body is to lull newcomers into a false sense of security, so they'll walk further into the house and into an ambush.
I bet it's a prank by the old man.
Ah yes, the old "Cadaver in the Coat Cubby." Classic.

...

This looks like Selly, one of the first years. Pretty weird kid, but this... this is new. Maybe she's just taking a nap in the coat closet? Yeah. A nap.

Check the woman's life. Specifically, if she has one. Of the breathing type, not the social type.

Alright Melody, just take a deep breath, keep it calm, and check if she's okay. You're no doctor, but you know enough to tell if she's just unconscious, or if she's hitching a steamcart ride to Reincarnation City.

> MEDICINE CHECK (UNTRAINED): 5 (5+0)

You can't tell what condition she's in at the moment, and you don't notice any obvious wounds. She isn't responding to your poking and prodding either, but at least she's still breathing. Albeit in faint, shallow breaths. You probably ought to do something for her, just in case.

Heal them if they're not dead.
Is it actually legal for us to practise magic around these parts?

Sure, spellspeaking is perfectly legal... as long as you're a member of the Inquisition. The Exemplarate barely even legalized Alchemy back in the day, since turning sulfur, niter, and charcoal into an explosive powder looks like magick to some people. Stupid people and zealots, namely.

Even though it's not legal, there are plenty of places you can still get away with spellcraft, so long as you make sure nobody sees, you don't tell anyone about it, and you leave no trace behind. And luckily, magick doesn't leave many traces behind, unless you're Astral-sensitive. Even so, the last thing you want is an Inquisitor snooping around, and helping you find a new home in a dungeon somewhere. If you're making magick, you'd best make it quick.

Select -> Invigorate -> Girl from cabinet

She looks hurt. If she's still alive, our heal spell should help her to her feet. If not, I doubt it'll do anything.

> ARCANA CHECK - EVOCATION: 13 (6+7) vs. SPELLCRAFT: 12
Power Words: Select (SP 1), Invigorate (SP 1)

Selly gains 1 Temporary HP!

There we go, a little positive energy. It won't heal wounds, but it should dull any pain, and help her come around if she's been knocked out. Maybe then you can ask her what...

Lody? Is that you?

Lady? Who is she calling a lady? Melody is quite young, for an elf.

Not lady, Lody. Short form of Melody.

Answer. Investigate what happened.

But step away from the door first. Towards the exit. It would be embarrassing if somebody opened that door already in melee range with us.

They know our name. We know who they are. give them our traditional greeting for them whatever it is. Then show them the nearly dead girl.

We don't necessarily know who they are. They might just know our nickname from a second-hand source or something.

Anyway, try to recognize the voice before answering.

Just don't tell whoever just called you about the little positive energy injection you gave Selly.

you should probably get that guy/girl/thing calling you to help get Selly into a proper bed, Closets aren't good places for unconscious girls... or conscious girls for that matter.

It's me, Yrma. Are you okay?

Yeah. At least, I think so. Are you okay? I was in the library with Torrey when we heard a thud. Then I thought I heard you say something, but I couldn't make out the words.

Just don't tell whoever just called you about the little positive energy injection you gave Selly.

> BLUFF CHECK: 13 (8+5) vs. SENSE MOTIVE: ??

Oh, that? Traditional Elven profanity. Doesn't translate well.

You sure? Didn't sound like any dialect I've heard...

Will you just get your green arse in here already? Selly's hurt!

The door opens, and Yrma steps into the room. She seems surprised.

Selene! Oh gods, why didn't you say something sooner? Is she going to be alright? What happened?

She's unconscious, but I think she's stable.

Investigate what happened.

As for what happened, I was hoping you could tell me.

W-what do you want to know?

???

Say,"Let's start with the whole story of what happened" and then if there's time tell her a list of everything we want to know.

First ask her if she'll join us in stopping whoever did this.

That means joining our party.
