you do realize we are semi-role playing the local PDF, who likely have little actual experience, and quoting The Imperial Infantryman's Uplifting Primer (Damocles Gulf Edition), which is not noted for its Accuracy in depictions of the Enemies Of Man?
I do, sorry. I was not intending to argue with RP-ing, just stating what it is in the rulebook for those not knowing it. Maybe I shouldnt have. ::)

Eehhh, this is the Imperium. There's no real telling where each individual squad came from, or how experienced each one is. It's entirely possible one of the unlucky groups of bastards have been through quite a bit of combat and just didn't improve from it from whatever reason, so wildly disparate reactions among the squads (based to a degree on the willingness or unwillingness to RP, perhaps ;)) and hilariously varying professional behavior are fairly explicable.

What I'm saying is that if one of us happen to actually know what they're doing, instead of being as wildly inept as PDF are wont to be, we can handwave that just fine. Which is good, 'cause I don't really have any clue what's going on :P

Sergeant Androv Kepler has served in the PDF for ten years and risen through the ranks on sheer pragmatism. A lack of political connections has limited his further advancement until the war started, but he tends to have a more... cynical... view of the Infantryman's Uplifting Primer.

"Close with the bastards? Sounds great, but I heard through the grapevine that the frakkin' Tau have some kroot packs on planet. You don't want to charge over the hill into those bastards. I hear the filthy xenos eat people."

You're platoon commander for a bunch of nerds from the internet. Your job is to herd psychopathic (well, more psychopathic at any rate) cats

But the armor your troops are using make them pretty much immune to the Tau guns so you can run up and hit them with your swords and you'll cut though them like butter  ;D

@calan: is there any drawback to issuing those orders? If not, would there ever be any reason not to use them every turn?

There is no drawback. You can only give one per turn and have to pass a test for it to work, though. You can and should use them every turn.

We're going to need reinforcements soon to keep up with all the sergeants jostling for a chance to burn a hole through a xeno!

Hm... pulse rifles aside, I wouldn't mind finding a cache of carapace armor and hellguns. I'm sure the commissar can't disapprove of those. I think.

Time for a battle plan I think? I'll roleplay a veteran from the command squad until I can grab a tank.
"So, sir, we have two grunt squads on the road, plus one broadside. A target so juicy that even if the basilisk's commander was a grox he'll already be aiming for it. A good shot here could take off a third of their forces. The broadside is more worrying: these are tank hunters. In fact, they are utterly useless against infantry. But we can't let it destroy our basilisk. I advise for a concentrated heavy bolter fire. That should do. In the forest we apparently have another grunt squad on the right flank, and what appear to be pathfinders on the left. Those guys are pretty harmless by themselves, but they are support. Ya see, the filthy xenos are so damn blind -praised be the emprah- that they need a squad whose only job is to litterally paint a big red target on our guys so theur buddies can actually hit something. So if yer squad is covered in red dots, ya better duck. But if ya hasnt the common sense to do this in the first place, yer place is on the fields shoveling grox shit, not here. Otherwise, it's just a matter of shooting 'em until they're dead.

Alright, Here is what I could make out from the numerous requests:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Yes, Mcclay got company command. Even if people said "platoon command", consensus seemed to be that he was the highest graded guy there.
This is by no mean official, I am open to rectifications.

Also, basilisk on the guys on the road is better. Pathfinders are only 6, and inside a cover. plus, the scatter means thatif we fire on the road, we're still likely to hit something. That means target O is better than C (it's surrounded: by scattering we have high chances to pick the broadside or C). The circles CO are the approximate size of the explosion (maybe a bit too big).

And actually the suit is probably out of range. We can still fire the basilisk and a couple heavy bolters.
