Where? I heard one time that near a volcano there is always a depression/ chasm. So how can find them on the map?

Chasms do not exist anymore, not in the current version of the game at least. There are chasms in the arena and a rough equivalent in hell, but no more surface chasms.

Crap. Well other than digging a big hole in the ground what parameters can i use in advanced world gen to make deep canyons? Dont i have to stop it from eroding walls, then turn up the erosion by the rivers? Or would I be better off digging a huge moat type of thing that is 30 - 40 z levels deep?

I've had the notification *chasm discovered* pop up once in one of the more recent versions of the game, but it turned out to be a really, really deep cavern (>70 z-lvl down, if I remember correctly).
I could not see the cavern floor at first though, so until I dug down way deeper it just appeared as a big black hole.

Yeah, aren't those/didn't those used to be just big holes that connect the cave layers?

I could have sworn that they still exist in the current version of the game, but are extremely rare.

I can't remember if I found a chasm linking 2 of the cave layers, or they were just like that naturally, it was a while ago.

But you won't ever find one like in the days of 40d.

Chasms still exist, they're essentially magma-free magma tubes. I assume they have a bottom at some point.

I think they need to make a come back even if its just linking all 3 cavern layers and the surface in a big gash, would make for some cool fort lay outs.
