I theorize this isn't even a thread about politics, but one rather of controlled flame-wars of various controversial topics not spoken aloud, with good reason, in polite society.
Nope. That's pretty much what politics is.

Let me hemp you with that:
http://www.salon.com/2013/02/04/apnewsbreak_effort_building_to_change_us_pot_laws/

Quote from: TheArticle
... an effort is building in Congress to change U.S. marijuana laws.

... both parties have been quietly working on several bills, and (Democratic Rep. Earl Blumenauer) and Colorado Democrat Jared Polis plan to introduce the first two on Tuesday. Polis’ measure would let states legalize pot and require growers to obtain a federal permit, while Blumenauer’s would create a federal marijuana excise tax.

Which comes at an interesting time, as CNN frontpaged this report on synthetic pot killing and brain-damaging people.

I have to admire the subject of the article. People don't come back from 70% brain death and being cut off life support very often, even with her permanent damage.

Given the majority of me ARE uncircumspected, you will find yourself grossed out often if you take to inspecting other men's wieners.

I often find that uncircumspected people of-Oh fuck it, penis cock pork-sword knob dong johnson slag hammer. Enough of the innuendo. Let's get down to politicking. Perhaps the newspapers should be concentrating on the fact that people might be falling ill from smoking legal highs because the healthier drugs are illegal. Maybe to solve that problem one could just, I don't know, legalise cannabis?

pork-sword.
...I didn't realize that's what that was a euphemism for. Dungeons of Dredmor just got that much naughtier.

I don't think you'll see legalization in this Presidential term. Not because of a lack of will, but a lack of political capital. If Obama takes the gun control fight to the end, he's gonna use up a LOT of political capital. After that, he's already got immigration reform on the deck as the next big issue. Factor in at least one foreign policy crisis, and he's gonna be tapped out.

I *do* think that legalization and regulation of marijuana is an eventuality though, probably in the next 5-15 years, but quite possibly not at the Federal level. I think it's going much the same route as decriminalization of homosexuality and gay marriage -- individual state initiatives and steadily changing public attitudes. There's a LOT of folks out there who smoke pot from time to time, not just the hardcore stoners. I'm not one of them (just because I've tried in the past and I guess I just don't have the neuroreceptors for it or something...and because now it would be verboten with a security clearance) but I don't see the problem if it's regulated.

Despite not smoking anything at all, I see no reason for marijuana to be illegal for consumption within one's own home. Obviously, it shouldn't be legal to smoke around children or before/during the operation of vehicles or heavy equipment. However, there's no reason that a person of legal age to imbibe mind-altering substances shouldn't be able to go down to the local pharmacy, pick up a little brown baggie and a couple bags of Doritos, and go veg out in front of the tv for the next eight hours.

Oh, and in election related news.  Iowa's Democratic Senator Tom Harkin won't run for re-election in 2014.  It's looking like it'll either be far-right Republican Steve King (IA-04) or moderate Tom Latham (IA-03) on the Republican side.  The Democrats would have a much easier time holding the seat if Steve King is the Republican nominee, but the seat would probably flip if Latham ran.  Of course, if Latham vacated his seat it may lead to a Democratic pick up in the house (Obama won the district).

On the Democratic side it'll most likely be Bruce Braley (another house representative, in IA-01), or possibly someone else.

I don't much like the Boy Scouts. I was in it for a few years and didn't learn anything of value except maybe some camping skills, and didn't really do anything of value except some community service.

Still I'll think it a step forward if they lift their ban on homosexuality.

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.
