Why can't I expand further? Why can't I upgrade my villages?

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

You have no free population, you'll get one at the end of this turn though. You do however, have some labor to use.

I'd recommend GWG that you improve a tile or 2 to get more food

Go to your original square, click one of those white textboxes, something will appear, pop:something will appear, click plus. You lack peeps.

Where will the population go and what does labor have to do with it?

Food helps?

Doesn't work.

In conclusion...is there somewhere that explains how all this works?

Unfortunately not. But I'll do my best here.

Food is consumed by pop (specifically, one food per pop). I believe Vanigo has worked in starvation, but I'm not sure how it works. If you ever have a 2:1 ratio of food to pop, you will trade as much food as you have pop for one more pop.
Labor is produced in settlements (the more pop in a settlement the more it produces) this is used as a resource for building and recruitment.
Money is also produced in settlements (again, the bigger the better) and spent on upkeep of military units.
All other resources are gathered from tiles (or produced by building things in settlements)

Never did do that, actually. Couldn't settle on the best way to reduce population automatically, since there are so many potential places to pull it from.

You don't have any labor, so you can't build anything, but otherwise it's fine.
