Malderik grimaces, and composes himself, before staring at the Duke.

"Need I remind you that I was once a member of the Engine Priesthood? While not a true clergy member, I nonetheless know far more of the Scripture than you are likely to, simply because it was my job. I know that considering these things is not heresy. Speaking of them is not blasphemy. No, for if we were to not, then how could we deal with the true heretics? But what intrigues me, is that you speak of me being a heretic for thinking of harvesting fuel from gas giants. After all, you had suggested much the very same thing just moments before. Hypocrisy does not sit well with me, Duke. When have I questioned the necessity of pulling back from terrestrial mining? I have called Mars backwater, because it is true. The very fact they still live on the planet proves it. You would wait until Terran mining stops before giving up your precious income. Let me ask you what you have sacrificed for the order. Let me ask you why you are even here on the Council, save for being a noble? You were never a priest. Besides, are not the citizens of Mars represented by you anyway? Why would they need a second? I have heard of diplomacy, but diplomacy has no place when trying to discuss matters of faith. Trying to convince another of their wrongdoing, and come to the light perhaps, but diplomacy is used for changing a person's ways, not discussing our religion. Disrespect of nobility is laudable, considering that you call me, who has proven himself in battle a thousand times over, a heretic. And why do you? Because I actually think. Rather than absorbing the ideas given to me, I wonder, and interpret the scripture for myself, along with every other Tech-Priest. Just as a species must evolve, so must we, and our faith. As for Venus, I don't think you understood what I meant. I did not propose actual colonization, I proposed giving life to the planet. Allowing their dead to rot would be a waste, and so we would harvest them. On another note, we need no defined scale. It is different for each planetary body, and giving a single scale would only create more disputes and rifts between our clergy. If you have enough money to pay for a fleet of corvettes, then by all means, go ahead. I think it would be a wonderful idea."

"Don't dare to twist my words. Mining minor moons  is not nearly same as mining atmosphere of planet. Under my humble proposal, major moons, like big four of Jupiter will not get mined. I admit that I may be wrong and would be happy if holy men would correct me. No, I don't think that you are a holy man. No faithful person would offer things like you did months before. No Faithful person will insult nobles and common citizens like you regularly do

You say that I care much about my own profits? Did you ever seen myself living in luxury? I think no. If I was as cynical as some other nobles.  I could abandon Mars, live off my possessions in The Asteroid Field and salary of the subcommander of the king's fleet. Buy luxury apartment here, at Vitality, and let citizens of Mars die of starvation. It's not my way.

You say that citizens of Mars represented by me? First, I said about believers, not citizens  and second, I have no place in theocratic council if you don't count a right of being observer from time to time. You know that, so your words are either unwise or manipulative. You may call me a rebel, but it's simply wrong that a large chunk of the council is composed from the citizens of Vitality, while our capital have only 5% of the population. Again. I am not demanding anything, as a humble believer I just bring that fact to the attention of our holy head priest, Tomalish."

"Comms, relay the following. Hercules, Perseus, Odysseus, and Achilles, take up diamond pattern positions, rear guard. Deimos, Phobos, dark wing formation on the main ship, watch the Pillar. Navigations, get us at least 200 kilometers away from the Pillar. Be ready for rapid retreat. If necessary, we will Testudo to protect it. Sensors, be ready to put up our EmP shields on a moment's notice. Drone squads Martyr and Seppuku be ready to launch. All weapons, focus on hostile corvette Alpha. Heros class Frigates, focus fire on hostile corvette Beta. Missile Gunships, save your ammunition for the big threats. They won't claim the Pillar while we yet draw breath.

You group your ship's in close formation, substantially increasing the effectiviness of point defenses, and advance towards the enemy. The Ares focusses the entirity of it's firepower on the enemy ship, but the small and nimble corvette manages to evade the lasers, and even launches several missiles before being torn apart by the railgun shells. The other target isn't faring much better. The concentrated firepower of the frigate proves to be impossible to dodge, and the entire ship is torn apart. However, all four ship's have managed to launch a missile salvo, but your pointdefenses prove to be adequate for the job, intercepting the missiles before they manage to impact.

The situation has turned a far bit to the worse though, as a new warpsignal is detected. 3 objects are coming into orbit, one carriersized flanked by 2 frigate sized objects.

Controlled units
Ares [Rebel flagship. 12 Railguns, 2 longrange lasers, Excellent point defense. Armor:40/40 ]
-Docking bay: 4 squads converted mining drones (Kamikaze only)
-Electromagnetic particle shielding (Negates all non kinetic damage as long as they are on, but prevents weaponry, sensors and communications from being used)
4 rebel Frigates [4 railguns, 1 longrange laser, Basic Pointdefense Armor: 10/10]
2 rebel missile Corvettes [Missile launchers only. Armor: 5/5]

Enemy ship's in sight
2 Enemy corvettes [???????]
       -Gamma
       -Delta
2 Enemy frigates [?????????]
1 Carrier
    -4 fighter squads

Our opening salvos tear apart half the enemy corvettes; good. Assuming the loyalists haven't changed any designs, they will have no defense against missiles. However, I watch in mild horror as a Carrier and two Frigates approach, and prepare to counter the inevitable fighter craft.

"Heros Frigates, focus all fire on their frigates. Missile Gunships, take out your counterparts. Weapon systems, aim for any incoming fighter squads, and focus railgun fire on their hangars."

"This is almost too easy...Are they trying to draw us away from the Pillar? Do not advance, men. Repeat, do not follow should they retreat. Priority is the Pillar."

I think there's still a major character spot. Not sure. There's also always minor characters.

There's a bit of rejoicing on the bridge, but the good mood is quickly shattered when the Carrier arrives into sensor range. Also, it appears that elsewhere the battle isn't going that well. Several groups are falling back, and others have already been completely eliminated. Missiles streak past, as your troops unleash a modest but destructive volley against the enemy corvettes. The latter scramble to return fire, or intercept the missiles, but their efforts are to little, and to late. A first missile hits, tearing into Target Delta, and the ensuing ordinances explosions rips the ship apart. The other follows moments later.

The enemy frigates, while outnumbered, prove to be a more dangerous opponent. These are the Order's most modern frigates, equiped with a variety of deadly weaponry. They unleash a complete volley of missiles, and as they do so, back it up with their railgun and laser weaponry. This combination proves to be overwhelming to your forces. While most missiles are intercepted, a single one still makes it through, striking the unprotected corvette. The explosions tears through it's thin armor, and while the resulting explosion is mostly harmless to the Ares's armor, it can't prevent some slight damage. At the same time, the other frigates have trouble maintaining formation. You see a slug embed itself straight into Perseus's, and the Achilles has been hit as well. Fire escapes through the hole in it's hull as debris and crewmembers alike are ejected into the void.

The return fire is just as deadly however, and the 2 enemy frigates are utterly torn apart by a concentrated barrage of shells.
The ship shudders and creaks as all it's railgun cannons fire in unison. The enemy carrier has apparently anticipated this move , have launched all it's fighters already. To your sadness, the firing crew informs you that their targetting computers are incapable of locking on to the fighters. Nevertheless, in it's straighton charge the enemy ship takes the full brunt of the fire, which sadly isn't enough to stop it. In return, it releases a staggering amount of missiles, most of which dummies, but which will most certainly overwhelm your pointdefenses. Close sensor images reveal that the fighters are armed with the same missiles, which are stunnishingly large and suprisingly diverse in size for any modern missile.

((Rather good rolls, and I'll think I'll keep the current system. It has a tendency to go between either instakill or very low/no damage, but that's fine.))
((Oh, and the next turn will be the end of the battle, just as a note))

"Damn...lost contact with the Perseus. Comms, inform the Odysseus to take up a defensive position on it. Try to get a manual link to one of the remaining primary stations, preferably the Medical Bay. Hercules is to protect Achilles, try to get some wires attached to let her tow them away from the fight. Phobos is to stay by us, and launch any and all remaining missiles at their fighters. Drone squadrons Martyr and Seppuku are to attack any surviving fighters. Phoenix and Kamikaze squadrons, aim for their hangar bays. Get as deep within their ship as possible before detonating. All remaining weapons are to aim for the enemy ship. Rail guns, focus on the bridge, Lasers, destroy their engines.

The enemy carrier attempts to turn away from the battle , and quite probably, flee. Unfortunately, it can't change it's course fast enough, end our ordinance quickly catches up with it. Explosions blossom on the hull, tearing apart the ship's engines and hull, untill nothing remains but glowing scrap.

On the other side of the battlefield, our drones, amidst a swarm of missiles, are trying to catch up with the enemy fighters. Contact with the Perseus is reestablished, but it's entire command crew was killed in the blast, throwing the entire crew in disarray. The captain of the Achilles let's us know that he has managed to stabilize the remainder of the engines, and that his ship can now safely be towed.

Sadly, though almost forgotton amongst the chaos, there's still a missile swarm moving in on our ship's position. The Oddyseus and Perseus are the first in the firing line, and while their point defenses prove valable, it is throwed in dissarray by the flares. A flash of light a thousand times brighter of the sun, and suddenly all that remains is scrap. Radiation alarms go off on the ship, as the shock settles. The crew attempts to raise shields, but it's to late. The Achilles is evaporated, and the Herculs soon follows, and not even the nimble Phobos can escape. Our point defenses buy us some time, but even they can't stop the flood, and then the Ares too is torn apart by nuclear fire. A burning husk drifting through space.

The simulation breaks off abruptly, and as the screens depolarize, you hear an explanation of what just happened. Apparently this was a simulation of what would happen if Order 56 had been ratified, rather than failing with a minor margin, as it did in reality. Interesting thing is that they seem to be calling you commander.

Traits gained:
-No men left behind: (10% of all destroyed ship's in battle can be recuperated). Minus to retreats
-Close formation specialist: Bonus to close formations.

Sweet. What's Order 56?
Permission to use overwhelming amounts of Nuclear Weaponry against Martian targets. In ingame reality*, it wasn't given, and the vanguard suffered a humiliating defeat , though they did managed to ram the spire, before the rest of the fleet moved in and cleared out the rebels.

*Ie, IC history, not simulation
