assuming you put 1 initial point into mechanics

You're also locked out of Constructions above level 4, computers (good luck restoring limbs if you lose one), and now that recipes require reading the book once to learn it, most of the upper-tier content.

Vehicles, too, unless you know to take that initial point in Mechanics to mitigate Illiterate.

You can train mechanics in other ways than building vehicles and reading. Lockpicking and prying things open trains mechanics a little bit, IIRC.

Illiterate is hilarious for RP, though. Make a character with as low intelligence as you can and jack up strength all the way and name him Slab McBeefcake or something similar. Proceed to purée zombies with a nail bat for as long as you can manage.

There is talk of a mechanism for learning recipes without the book, its either going to create a random recipe to read or give a chance to learn a random recipe.

Just jump in, I came back to it after eight months away and it is ridiculously richer. My first run as a cyberninja was only overshadowed by my long surivival as a man-bear with a flamethrower. (Note: I tend to debug menu my characters around rather than just playing as I am supposed to: thus adding bouquets of weird mutations follows chargen

Do NPCs work PROPERLY yet?

I notice they are still disabled by default.

EDIT: Also are hordes working or does the hordes function still work off dynamic spawns rather than static spawns?

Advantages and disadvantages need (but won't get) balance, badly; Illiterate renders the game basically unplayable.
Trigger Happy is pretty much free points right now. It's a slight negative effect IF you use a weapon with multiple firing styles.

It should really give a morale penalty if you perform non-automatic ranged attacks.

Hordes work now they're just represented strangely. Also NPCs do work somewhat, but they still have their own problems so I'd be careful turning the on if you're going for a longer run.

Hordes work now they're just represented strangely. Also NPCs do work somewhat, but they still have their own problems so I'd be careful turning the on if you're going for a longer run.

What do you mean strange? If you mean they still rely on dynamic spawns I can't count that as fixed. I'm one of the many people that only play with static spawns.

And what problems with NPCs? Are NPCs ever going to get a rework :(?

Hordes are still relying on dynamic spawn, yes (Kevin's been working on his aiming/gun overhaul PR recently instead).

As for NPC's, we've made some great progress on that, and Acidia has been making further great strides. I'd probably be willing to turn on static NPC's in my games now, though roaming ones still have problems from time to time.

Hordes don't need you to have dynamic spawn on to play with them right?

Correct, they tap into the dynamic spawning algorithm even in static mode, just like normal wildlife does currently.
