Update on that inactive manhack I found; apparently in activating it you run a risk of "misprogramming" it in which case it becomes hostile and attacks you. If you program it correctly I assume it'd be a friendly NPC companion.

In further news, the preppy tailor reincarnation of Gordan Freeman has committed suicide via manhack. Still, I survived three days, which is a vast improvement to many of my characters who survive less than a day. I think I'm getting the hang of this.

So, after genning a new world I started a character with the goal of being a tailor drunken unarmed master who was usually drunk and use krav maga.

The starting shelter was stocked with goods, including a backpack, flashlight, and a couple bottles of water. Not far from the starting shelter I found a bunch of dead military dudes who supplied me with lots of rations, water, a utility vest, army pants, helmet, a military rucksack and kevlar vest, and the best loot: a FN SCAR-H and various unattached moddings such as a suppressor, extended magazine, and underslung shotgun. No ammo for it, sadly, and I have no skill in firearms to mod it yet but I'm definitely hauling the gear with me and keeping a watch out for ammo.

I'm all set for a while, with food, water, sewing kits, and various first aid products. Also tons of cigarettes from military dudes.

Couple questions:
1) Aside from shooting a gun or reading a book, is there any way of upping my firearms skill?

2) Ammo for guns can't be crafted, only found "naturally" in the world, right? So I should ration any ammo found, I assume.

3) To use an unarmed style it has to be listed as my weapon, right? After picking something up in my hands I'm only listed as using "fists" and attempts to "press '-' to choose a style" in the (w)ield screen result in "you don't have that item" spam. how do unarmed style?

You can, in fact, craft ammo. I think it's relatively difficult, though.

How do you guys start out with the static spawn option on? Even when trying to just loot houses on the border i always get slowly worn down by dogs, which then slow me down enough to die from the horde of hulks and spitters and such.

What character stats and skills do you start out with? What do you usually do first when you spawn? Just really not having an easy time since i usually use dynamic spawn and they seems way easier to me than static spawning.

Smash one of the display racks in the starting shelter to get a pipe, then use a rock to turn that into a crowbar. That and effective use of bushes, cars and windows to slow down zombies makes things much easier.

Does static spawn make all the zombies at worldgen, or at the beginning of a game?

Worldgen, if you clear out a town and later die then the town will still be cleared out for subsequent characters.

Oh. Well then, that explains my success with static spawn: A horde of melee fighters with nail boards, leaving caches of goods all over every spawn town.

There's a 'kinetic bullet puller' that can disassemble ammo, and a gunsmithing tool that lets you re-assemble ammo.  You can take casings and refill them with other pilfered bits of gunpowder and shot.  I've never used it myself, not much of a gun user, considering the high noise and low ammo drops, as well as the skill that you have to invest to get 'good' means firing a LOT of relatively rare ammo... yeah I don't do it much.  But I should.  I used to, and really want to get another twerked out Savage 111F to build an amazing vehicle as a gun platform.

The ammo crafting system can only convert between weak ammo and stronger ammo for the same weapon or change the casings of similar ammo, because of the limitations of primers and casings. Primers can't be crafted, so essentially any ammo you find is all that there is of that type. For example, you can convert .38 into 9mm, or 9mm into 9mm+P, but wouldn't be able to create new 9mm without finding primers. You can still use the gunpowder and lead of something like rifle ammo to improve your 9mm ammo, but can't bring new pistol ammo into the game without finding primers.

You can add crafting recipes for primers, which is what I did. It's not very realistic, since it's an expensive, difficult, and dangerous process in real life using specific materials and equipment, but I think it's necessary to play a full gun character. For shotguns in particular it's nice, since they only use one ammunition size.

It shouldn't be unusual to find primer in a gun store - if it's not already true then it should be included.  As I understand a lot of gun enthusiasts make their own ammo.

The primers are specific and the drops uncommon enough that it's not very practical. In my current character, I've raided something like 15 gun stores and only occasionally found primers, which all turned out to be useless. It's divided into shotgun, small pistol, large pistol, small rifle, and large rifle (may be missing one), so you only have a 1/5 chance of the primers you find being usable for a given gun. Since all shotgun ammo is usable by all shotguns, there's actually zero point to saving shells, unless you get lucky and find a bunch of primers.
