Buh. So, with the discovery of movable furniture, I finally had a decent thing going- somehow, this character had survived being trapped in a basement by a horde of zombies, survived being similarly trapped in the cave he fled to, and then survived (and killed) a small group of zombies that chased him into a house.
That house became a base, he chose one small room and blocked all the entrances, rested and then set about pillaging nearby houses. He found plenty to drink, vitamins and painkillers, even some weed.

Still, food was a problem. I killed a large spider that had been lurking around the area and managed for the first time to successfully butcher something. Cheered by my success, I dragged the corpse to my house's oven and entered the crafting menu. Hmm, apparently I can't use an oven? Oh well. In a fit of thoughtlessness I smashed a cupboard and set fire to that instead.

I'm not sure just WHAT my safehouse was built from, but judging by the fireball it was some sort of thatched hut.

At least I survived, but now I'm on foot, near a massive fiery zombie beacon and less most of my supplies- and I still have an empty belly. :-\

See my post a few pages back. You're not the first to see their current hideout go up in flames.  ::)
Rule of thumb, don't make a fire indoors. I'll test it next time by building a small fire next to an outside wall, see if it catches-- although my current plan right now is to find a shovel. This shovel and a nearby gas station shall be my new WMD.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I've not tested it with roofs yet but I'm assuming it's the floor that catches fire, so if you build your own cabin (yeah, that's not asking for trouble at all lol) you could probably dig a firepit, wall everything off (so the light can't escape) and you'd be generally secure.
That is, if roofs don't catch fire.

Then again, building your own cabin would generally give you a safe place to sleep-- the only problem would really be acquiring the tools to make it. (a wood axe, a hatchet/saw as minimum and preferably a hammer and a shovel for construction and a moat.)
Then again, you'd have to hunt for food and water too.

I've had more success, now- I generally just use thrown rocks to kill critters, and I've been using the flaming wreckage of my house as a cooking fire. :P I kinda regret picking the vegetarian trait now, but y'know... At least my character's routine is generally: wake up, hunt, kill something and butcher it, cook & eat and then sleep. That way he's usually forgotten about the poor critter he murdered by the next day.

I don't see this guy lasting much longer, though- I'm in an annoying spot on the map. No rivers etc nearby, and I'm stuck in this one area with a low dead population.

>Burn down a house
>Use it as a cooking fire.

Classic. :D

And yeah, I've never taken the veggie trait, it just seems to me that finding vegetarian food would be a big hassle. You could always forage, but aside from a few strawberry or blueberry bushes it would take a lot of exploring for not much food. Some houses have the occasional apples/tomatoes/broccoli in the fridge, though-- and I'm pretty sure a grocery would have some-- then again I've not explored a grocery yet as there's usually some sandwiches or crisps lying around in houses.

Then again, farmhouses always make nice hideaways and you can usually clear them out pretty easily, but most of the crops are withered.

Problem with meat is I'm pretty sure a lot of it is radioactive, if not all.

Eventually died to a cougar that I accidentally ran into.
Going to have to look into that automatic safe mode option... Ah well, that was a learning experience. Time for another go!

Floors and roofs are the same thing. And meat is not radioactive, the Hot tag is simply a feature that I started adding twenty versions ago then promptly forgot about.

We should probably change the tag to (fresh) or something rather than (hot) so it works with berries and the like. (hot) berries seems weird.

Another really minor suggestion:  It would be nice if steel spears had the same cooking functions as wooden ones, for cooked meat and such.

I generally up dex to 10, for the +1 throwing bonus. it's not much, but if you think about how many time you'll be throwing stuff it all adds up. hell, even just carrying a few rocks to pelt at zeds for 5 damage a time is nice.

also
> Roll a new character with a point in archery
> Find crossbow traps 5 map tiles from the shelter.
Oh yeah.

Dark, you really should make it that when you disassemble crossbow traps you get some of those bolts too. I have to step on them just to get bolts and with my dodge/perception scores they never activate. :P
Sometimes I get lucky and accidentally set them off when trying to disarm them, but still.

That said I was kiting zeds out of town ( I wanted a safehouse on the outskirts ) and killing them one by one with my newfound crossbows But they just keep coming.
run back to the traps and run them over-- lol, landmines, shotgun traps and beartraps. Run them over some rubble nearby--

Fungaloids come out of the forest and start spreading spores.

Ohshi.jpg
It could have been such a good run too.
