If the folding bicycle is any indication, then no. More "can't be changed" than "don't retain changes", but I'm fairly certain they wouldn't retain the changes even if changes could be made, considering how the system works. I'm not even sure the folding bicycle can be damaged.

Last night was running through a field with my shopping cart when suddenly my vision was completely obscured by... ectoplasm?!

I cleared up the condition using eyedrops (which I originally implemented as an ingredient in a krokodil mod but have yet to get around to finishing that) and there was no signs of any other ghostly activity. Spooky.

   So I noticed something after clearing a megastore (the small 3x3 stores, not a mall) of all shelves and such. Apparently unlike some things there isn't a cap to how much experience you can gain from doing that so I now have 10(70%) in construction. That might be something worth changing as it is a bit to easy to do that. I will note that I am playing on experimental build 1529 in case it has been changed since then.

Modifications to folding vehicles are disabled for exactly that reason.  The damage persists however.  The main holdup for making craftable folding vehicles is figuring out the boundaries for what we should let you craft, and making the resulting folded vehicle item dynamic, as in make the weight and volume correct.

Nope, there's currently no cap on construction training, will fix, thanks.

Hmm... could you make it so you can slot addons onto a folding bicycle, like gun modifications, and then have it spawn a slightly different bike? Mainly thinking like, adding an extra small storage box. A small man-power headlight, etc.

Might be too complex, I dunno. Just putting it out there.

I would think you would just need hinges. From there, simply define how much the volume of each part/type of part is reduced by collapsing it and go from there. If the player wants to make a folding car, let them - when they wind up with a 3000 volume monstrosity that can't be lifted or moved, it's on them.

By "holdup" I mean, "thing making it take longer", it's going to happen.

Basically we can serialize the entire vehicle using the same method we use to write save files, but write it to the new "folding vehicle" item instead.  Of course these suckers are the data equivalent of a black hole, a single item could easily have several KB of data packed into it to store all the vehicle state.  That's not actually a problem, it just amuses me.

Then we need a way to have the single "folded vehicle" item vary in weight and volume based on the properties of the vehicle.  We generate new item types on the fly to implement artifacts, and it's a horrifically bad idea, we're not going that route.  So instead the item class has to do special handling for these guys, though it should be generic enough to also use for other things.

I've noticed a few days ago there was already a folding frame part that I tried to make a folding shopping cart out of but had no luck.  Judging from yer above post I'm guessing they are just non-functional at the moment?

Yea, there has to be a part for the folding bicycle to use, but it can't be added to.
