and i think now is a perfect time to be mad. Not sure if Mal intended it this way or not, but we ahve been screwed over by a breach of rules, rules laid down earlier in the thread.

I dont like it. Therefore i am complaining.

You say he got the idea from us as though that's a good thing. We're players, not the Sea Raiders' lead scientists. It's an even worse feeling to have an idea turned against us after we promoted it. We ourselves conclude that we aren't at that level, yet suddenly the Sea Raiders tech up in the midst of retreating. The arsenal of the Sea Raiders was pretty well established before then, and they weren't using these to blast open the gate of Fallberg...

Sigh... If you weren't surprised, then you should have been.

-SNOP-

you are to expect people to throw an universe-fucking spanner in the works when everything is going very very smoothly

universe-fucking part optional

i'd justify all this as a glorious feint on part of the sea raiders but i don't need to justify shit it's magic for all we know until we get word of god here

now let's amplify our relaxed states and watch as we don't advance in power too quickly and maybe even get to another generation of the stone family before being dukes?

I am not sure what to say. Reading these last few pages has not been fun, and has actually been quite difficult for me. I would have hoped that I would have received some benefit of the doubt, having run this game on and off for eight months and 290 pages, but that clearly is not the case. As I do not need this level of negativity in my life, I am going to take a break. See you around the forums.

:( Yeah, I was afraid of that....

Let me just say that I love your story Mal, from the Bear to the Bomb and all the rest. Sometimes shit just happens. I assumed we'd get a chance to try and that maybe we might pull an Odysseus a la Odyssey. Maybe we'll be lucky enough to see how it plays out if we're fortunate enough to have you come back when/if you're ready.

Later.

Swamp gas doesn't perforate armour.  Just pointing that out.

But the trade, or raiding, hypothesis is quite possible.

-snip-
It was highly unusual. I suspect that factors we didn't know about combined with our luck conspired to nearly end Stone. (Again.)

We have probably already lost our wife (cannot hold land in her name, so has probably left our lands to return to the Duke. She probably also thinks us dead).

WE have probably already lost our lands. (Reassigned to another surviving lord due to our apparent death).
Aren't there regents for this kind of thing? We've got an heir, after all.

At the moment we have FUCK ALL. No land, equipment, skills, supporters and no fucking chance. The hospital is probably the best place to stay. After all, in the state we are in now, we haven't a hope in hell of getting to the capital or to our lands alive.
Depends on the state of the nation.

It might be a mistake on Mal's part, or it might be intentional, with something more coming.
Or it might be a mistake and there's something more coming.

Back in my day*, I often waded through ten pages of posts, minimum, uphill both ways! And those were the slow days!
*Read "The heyday of RotMG and current TwiAc".

So much entertainment lost now.
Indeed. Geez, people...

The reason why this thread isn't locked yet is because Mal wants to continue his story. And I say that he should do so. Read the posts again, Mal. The posts specifically are not saying that you suck and have no talent. They are saying that you had a bad patch, and wrote some plot twists that were not foreshadowed anywhere and seemed random and a bit forced.

You ask for the benefit of the doubt, and it is yours. Yet naturally there remains doubt. There are too many questions and what seem to be potential inconsistencies. If we proceed, then the story must try to explain how a culture without advanced metallurgy got these things, and why they used them only on one occasion. This stuff wasn't foreshadowed. That oversight was an avoidable mistake that can be acknowledged and improve your narrative skills in future. Even with the benefit of the doubt, it remains true that certain traditional authorial best practices were not followed.

I suggest you read the remarks after a good rest without indignant defensiveness and we use this bad patch to improve later on. And if I could pinpoint an exact place where I should apologise for my remarks, I would gladly do so. I expressly have said that you are usually full of good ideas, but that these updates broke narrative rules concerning the importance of foreshadowing, and gaming rules about allowing the players to feel agency in the character's outcomes.

If the thread doesn't restart, then I read that as an admission that the thread was simply at the end of its natural life-cycle. Every story has an end. Yet threads ought not to end because some people point out objections to narrative flaws that can be learnt from. If that happens, then there were hidden underlying issues that made an end inevitable.

Anyone lnow of ay other nice forum games?

Nope. Not realistic and well-written ones. And the usual suggester pool is committed to irony and quirkiness in a way that ruins most games on page 4 when the quirky novelty of their suggestions wears off. Without this thread, personally, my interest in these forums shrinks to lurking on Other Games.

And who could be our regent? the Duke? probably dead. One of our retainers? Probably dead, and not noble so therefore cannot be regent. We will have lost our lands. If we suddenly pop up at the dukes place, assuming he actually survived (and by the fact that the Duke was in the cavalry charge that got decimated by !!!SURPRISE MAGIC GRENADES!!!!, i highly doubt that) we may get our wife back, but i highly doubt that as well.

Depends on the state of the nation.

The state of the nation is probably somewhere between 'mostly fucked' and 'hell' at the moment. WE have only just gotten out of a devastating plague. THEN there was a huge sea raider invasion that almost destroyed the capital and killed the king. If the roads are NOT crawling with bandits, i would be surprised.

And there is nothing bandits like more than to rob and kill a lone invalid on the road, whether or not he actually has anything on him......
