We got that gold/silver mine. We can try to buy them.

Sieges can take a while. Sadly, it's a city that's under siege, not a fortress. Doubt it will last longer than 3-6 months.

I'm pretty sure the Bandit King wants legitimacy for the power he's obtained. That's what every successful outlaw wants, because that life catches upto you eventually. There's no future in his current line of work.

A city doesn't last for a discrete number of months like "now its here" and "now its gone." It progressively gets worse with each week that we delay because we are afraid to take risks. Rescuing a city two months after a siege began and the same city six months after the beginning is like rescuing different cities entirely. Time is not our ally.

We also should not delay when a settlement is being constructed near Torchester. Waiting for leisurely negotiations is giving that settlement time to prepare defenses.

Just wanted to note that the Spoilers will likely need a great deal of updating in the near future, once you've decided where you're basing yourself from. Either way, I'll have to update them to show the entire County, not just your land. Didn't have time to do that completely this morning. Maybe next update.

We should start a signal corps.  Use heliographs and morse code.  All we need is mirrors on a tripod, and communications downtime would be reduced such that we can rapidly respond to any situation.

Sieges can take a while. Sadly, it's a city that's under siege, not a fortress. Doubt it will last longer than 3-6 months.
There is likely a fortress/castle at the center of the city, so that part should hold out for quite a while longer than the rest of the city.

Which is why we make him lord of pigsend

This is also why we need the bandits on our side, we can use them as light infantry/skirmishers with which to attack the enemy.  It's no different from what they already do, and the reward will be even greater.  We should remember to tell that to this king of bandits.

How about we raise the levies from our own lands and ask our vassals upstream to raise their levies, then together we march to Pigsend on our way to meet up with the Duke's forces. Then we force the so-called "Bandit King" to contribute to the defense of the realm. IF he serves with honor, he can EARN our respect as a warrior and leader, and become a knight. Let him earn a title the same way we earned ours, through valor on the field of battle!

If he refuses, we'll have Denton and Percival there to help us destroy him.

Besides, it's interesting from a gameplay perspective too. There were rather few ideas about what to do with our village lately.
True. We've improved so much that improving it more seems silly, because we've got every single cool idea packed into it already, and more just crosses a threshold of disbelief.
Well, there's always just having a bigger, richer town, I guess. But yeah, we've basically beaten all the levels and now we're just going for the high score.

Nevertheless, let's talk about the war.
Agreed. It's immediately relevant.

We have to make this sales pitch to the Bandit King in person, you know. We have one month to get him on our side, drive off the raiders near Torchester, and do something about the King's situation. We do not have time to ping-pong representatives and go-betweens slowly between us. We have to make the contact in person now.
While I'm normally against going personally to armed camps of probable hostiles, we're pressed for time.

Quote
We take a small fast force, well-armed enough to breakthrough a trap, and we meet him in the next few days. This negotiation requires our personal finesse and face-to-face reassurances. Seal the deal now, and turn south with him.
Aye.

We got that gold/silver mine. We can try to buy them.
Nay. Once he gets the money, he's little better than a wild card.
Why isn't the Rat like this, you probably didn't ask? Because we've built up trust.

I think we should vassalize the Bandit King. We ask him to recognize us as his liege lord, and so send us levies and (later) reasonable taxes (and stop banditing). In counterpart, we recognize him as the legitime ruler of Pigsend, and allow him to raise (reasonable) taxes on inhabitants and merchants.
If we pull this right, we can offer him an attractive deal that doesnt make us appear weak.

On the subjet of vassals, we need to receive the vows of our neighbours. If only to officialize the whole things. During the meeting, make it clear that we do not intend to get all high and mighty and arrogant. We will take the responsibilities, and stay their loyal friend. Taxes need to be mentioned. Ask for a symbolic coin this year (until everyone recover from the plague) or something equally reasonable.

I noticed the archive, Gerv.

Nice heading picture, nice map, and the link by clicking on the header is broken.

Thanks, I think the archive was needed with the size of this thing. For some reason I forgot how BBcode links worked. I've got all the way to the end of the first Viking war done in formatting.

It is a nice archive. Nice to be able to read the updates without needing to read two million pages of discussion in between each month.

I like forcing the bandit dude to prove his worth better than just outright knighting him.  let's do that.

Either way works. If we make him prove his worth, it either needs to be in or not take much time from the war.

From my perspective, his worth is ... he has men who answer to him. They do not answer to us, and the world is not overflowing with able-bodied men who can fight. If we want to play ball with him, we give him something he wants. If we want to play mind games and act like we have the leverage, it'll fall apart. We need him more than he needs us. He can ignore the collapse of the current feudal system like the Duke and the King because he isn't in that system, whereas we are part of that system and the Sea Raiders are destroying our command nodes. If we want him and his followers, we have to bring him into the system and give him a reason to preserve it.

Btw, what of the other Counts under the Duke? Count Zanders and Count Gorgon? We should connect with them before relieving Torchester.

I hadn't thought of that. We definitely need to...wait, Count Gorgon? Sounds like a...stony person.
