I'm with Mlamlah here, no harm in attending some social events and getting to know the eligible ladies. but we really shouldn't be like "omg you can haz my babiez?"

Focus on trade, setting up trade deals, putting the finishing touches on the brewery and mill, and making sure your people are safe from the cold and well fed. Also learn etiquette and speech craft both from the squire and irlof, after all, haggling isn't only used in trade.
And if time is left, repair/improve your house. DIY with any people willing to help.

both of these sound good, but I think home improvement will probably not work out because of the season. but its worth a shot :)

I agree with the social benefits of attending a feast, but there is no need to rush into seeking marriagable ladies, i'm... not actually sure how old we are, but we're marriagable at any age and we've got plenty of time, there are more important matters to attend to.

You are 20, soon to be 21.

Year 2, December

December is unusually mild this year, with no snow on the ground. The people are well-fed and sheltered given the mild weather, and the trappers continue to pull in game even in the winter.

Marge sets up her brewery, and even manages to start up her first batch of beer, even though it won't be ready for a couple of months.

You spend most of your time working on etiquette and rhetoric with your squire and steward. The progress is slow, but you started from nothing, so that is to be expected. You imagine that you would still offend most high-born people at a fancy dinner, and your rhetorical skills are less than eloquent.

With the river still unfrozen, you manage to entice some more merchants in for future trading. Word is that your land is growing in reputation as a spot for trading, and you expect that next year's markets will be even busier.

You continue to work on your house, but you have more or less done all the minor repairs that you can on it. The next step would be to spend your remaining money on furnishings, or to start saving up for a new house.

we should try and get a few more militia members. also... maybe we should make a trip to the county capital and shop for some 'fancy' clothes. something that doesnt make it completely obvious that we're a peasant turned knight when we're attending social matters. So maybe something for social events and also an upgrade for our day to day wear. something modest, but of class and sturdy enough for the lord that involves himself with the land. we have been neglecting our 'finer needs' a bit.

Recruitment may indeed be a good idea, but we don't have anyone to train them beyond us and our squire, we should get at least one retired soldier, preferably several before we start recruiting again. Keep our current militia training however.

Lets go to town to get the clothes, we can probably find a few old soldiers and mercinaries in a inn or tavern.

Good idea, that way we have a multi layered ranking system, us the CO, our Advisor as the XO, Veterans as the sergeants, our current militia as the corporals, the new guys as privates and so on. Military revolution here we come! Or is that to future tech?

Those merchants visiting our villages should have some sort of guards, maybe they will know a guy?

lets not forget that sir Percival will also be sending down a guy. He might be offended if he finds the post already filled by another.

I actually suggest in the interest of the lands to go and find a 'marriageable' lady of nine-ten years old.
Before launching the 'pedophile' accuse, consider this:
Agreements are made, favorable for us of course, and we agree to marry a third/fourth daughter of someone without asking too much of a dowry when the girl grows up. Till then the 'lady' stays with her parents. (as was custom) we'll probably have to visit once or twice, but we might get a far wealth of contact from the girl's family, and depending on how well we make the contract, we might not even have to trouble ourselves with it in the years to come.
You know the good old drill...'keep her pure' 'pay bard' 'laugh maniacally in the background for a well executed plan'

“Well,” he said. “We’re in the Forgotten hunting grounds I take it. Your screams just woke them up early. Congratulations, Lyara.”
“Do something!” she whispered, trying to keep her sight on all of them at once.
Basileus clapped his hands once. The Forgotten took a step forward, attracted by the sound.
“There, I did something. I clapped. I like clapping,” he said. -The Investigator And The Case Of The Missing Brain.

Maybe before we hit the road we should set the construction of the mill in motion.

And the mine. Have some serviceable stone before we get to work on a furnace, without making our potters work to hard.

This ignores a lot of the reasons we don't want to marry right now, it's not really a solution. We have no prospects right now. We are uneducated, poor, with no great battles or achievements, and most importantly of all we are commonborn. Rare is the noble family that will give us the time of day. never mind a daughters hand in marriage.

Let's check out the feast and call it that for this discussion. We will reopen it when we see how we fare with the women folk and have ACTUALLY met a noble woman for once. Right now it is inappropriate.
